| I'm new to the aviation world and I was wondering if there is pilot that stay Regional threw out their whole aviation career. Or you have to move on up to the big boys toys? |

| Junior Member | People spend their careers at the regionals all of the time. You don't have to move up. |

| Depends on the kind of life style you want for yourself. Money is nice, but doesn’t mean it always brings happiness. Maybe a regional will pay less but give you more time with your family. It’s all about your personal lifestyle.

| Old Skool | We're having this discussion on another board right now. There are a lot of CAs that like having the seniority to get the days off they want, work as much (or as little) as they want, not have to move to another base or commute to another base, or just don't want to take the temp pay cut. Ten years ago, the regionals wouldn't have been paying well enough even at CA rates to make it a career. Now, you can. Personally, I'd prefer the marginally better job security at a major than the bidding war at the regionals. When the time comes to move on to something better, I'll be looking at all the options before I make a snap decision. I'm sure Tenney could tell us a little about jumping to a major from a regional. Midway anyone?

With grammar like that, a regional might be all that is in the cards. I don’t mean to sound rude, but if it’s so bad that one has to read it two or three times to understand it…. ...and people wonder why a bachelors degree is preferred or required….

You don't make bad money as a regional captain, especially with seniority. It isn't a bad place to spend a career, if you decide to. Captain salary at the regional level is on par with what one would probably expect to make in a career outside of aviation, and in some cases, more. With seniority, some people do not want to leave their job at the regional level. As a captain they are making good money, bidding a good line, getting good days off, etc., and they don't want to start over again at the bottom of a major. Even if it is more money.

| Old Skool | If he's "new to the aviation world," I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he doesn't have the time to go straight to a major. The majors like to see turbine time (and a lot of them prefer turbine PIC time). There are several ways to get that time so you can move on to a major. Regionals are just one of those ways, so don't just narrow it down to that unless you're crazy like me and enjoy the pressure of an airline. ![]()

| If he's a military pilot, perhaps. Pretty sure I'm not going out on much of a limb to suggest that he is not. Simply being in the military will not help one go directly to the majors as a pilot.

| Okay C130avi: You could help us all give you some better answers if you tell us a little about yourself. You certianly don't come across as a military pilot, or perhaps English is your second language. Care to help us out here? |

| The people in the top 50 out of 800 pilots here have 25+ years with the company. Somehow I doubt there is something wrong with them for not wanting to "move up". $100k/yr+, 5 weeks vacation (with trip touching, which means more like 7-8 weeks) per year, bidding #15 or less in base. On top of that, they are the ones getting 17+ days off/month. Yeah, I bet their lives suck .

| Old Skool | We have guys at our company that work either 5-11 AM Monday thru Thursday or 12-7 PM Monday thru Thursday. These guys are home everynight and make OK money, especially if they are a checkairman. One guy flew in the Air Force then was with Pan Am. |

The good news for you OldTown is that they always have four captains up there. The fourth captain up there is always a floater. They have great lines and you should have no problem holding that base eventually!
