Any other plane owners out there take their young kids flying? I have a 15 month old who my wife and I want to take up, but he keeps a headset on for all of 3 seconds before he rips it off. I don't think it's too loud in there...but don't want to risk damaging anything. Anybody out there have any luck with ear plugs or something similiar??

Try cutting the foam ear plugs in half lengthwise. Other than that There isn't much you cna do if junior won't wear the headset. However, unless you take him flying on a daily basis, the noise won't really damage anything. He will be fine untill he gets old enought to understand that he needs to wear his headdset.

You can be exposed to 90dbs for something like 4 hours before hearing is affected. Most airplanes are around 75-80dbs inside, so if its a shorter flight, I think the little guy would be alright.

If it's just the occasional short trip, really you have no worries. The little guy will learn to keep a headset on soon enough You can try the earplugs cut in half, but I never had any luck with that. I just took them up headset-less and wore my headset on one ear so I could hear if he started screaming.

The regular foam earplugs are too large for an infant or toddler, but E-A-R makes one that is smaller and compresses much more (and has a greater NRR rating than the original yellow foam ones, ironically). They're smooth and bullet-shaped, not rod shaped like the originals. Oh, one other thing: plural for aircraft is "aircraft". No "s".

aircraft can be plural. hanyway, I am extremely sensitive when it comes to hearing, and if I were you, I wouldn't take any chances. Experts can say all the want about <90 dB isn't going to harm, but I'm wouldn't let let my little one be exposed to that. disclaimer: i do not have a child. ... someone is going to say "yeah... that you know of... " i'm way ahead of you, NO!

My parents would put my little sister in the back seat of the 172 and she'd enjoy the flight - she was about 1 yr old and sat quietly in her car seat. My brother and I would be on either side! So imagine 3 kids in the back seat of a 172... hehe... it was fun. We'd always fly to some airport for breakfast.

We've got some folks in my flying club who go up with their kids all the time. The kids enjoy it. They just put little earplugs into the children's ears. It seems to work okay and they'll do that until they can wear a headset. |

This'd probably be a great post for the flight surgeon forum.
