Default Logging IFR Currency with safety pilot

Hi, I have about a week left of my second 6 months of instrument currency. I have a question dealing with logging those holds and approaches with a safety pilot. If I do an approach with a safety pilot, do I need to put down the name of the safety pilot, or other information indicating that a safety pilot was present?

Just the name of the safety pilot, and of course the procedure you flew.

What would be required if I did a few approaches in an FAA-approved FTD with another CFI sitting in the back of the approved FTD?

That it's logged and signed by the CFI-I running the FTD

Safest bet, regulation-wise, is to treat it and have the CFII (2-I's required) endorse it as instruction given.

Your primary regulatory reference is 61.51(g)(3) and (4)
==============================
(3) For the purposes of logging instrument time to meet the recent instrument experience requirements of § 61.57(c) of this part, the following information must be recorded in the person's logbook -

(I) The location and type of each instrument approach accomplished; and

(ii) The name of the safety pilot, if required.

(4) A flight simulator or approved flight training device may be used by a person to log instrument time, provided an authorized instructor is present during the simulated flight.
==============================

The FAR doesn't =say= that it has to be an instructional session but I've never seen anything from the FAA that helps to figure out what "an authorized instructor is present" means, so I think the best course of action is to log it as instruction, figuring that there was some reason the FAA wants an
authorized instructor" involved rather than your cousin Joey.

The "authorized instructor" may also be a person holding an IGI (instrument ground instructor) certificate when conducting IPCs or currency in a FTD or approved instrument training device.
