In your opinion for an independent study for the PPL exam what would you recommend? Also I think for an independent study a book that comes with a workbook would work the best for me.

Gleim PPL Written, Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook, and ASA Combo, or separately-Airplane Flying Handbook and Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge I have purchased many books on the subject, I have found that this combination covers all the areas of interest. I also have the Jepp and it is a good text to have but not necessary. If you have money to burn, go for it, get them all.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have already a copy of Machado’s book, and I am planning on obtaining his workbook as well. Looks like it boils down to Gleim’s book as well as Jeppessen’s. I might buy them both. (The FBO recommends William Kershner’s book, wonder if I will end up buying that one too) Last edited by SharkFisher; August 17th, 2006 at 09:19.

Kerschners book is ok. The ASA ones suffice if you already have Machado and Jepp. Don't really need the Jepp imho.

ASA combo looks really good, along with a copy of Machado, Gleim, and Jepp, I should be good to go by the time I get to Kershner. I will look at it like this. Instead of signing up for 5 classes I signed up for 4, for the fall semester. So my 5th class will be this!

One thing that is really good about the Jepp is it has really nice graphics that are very good for visual learners. It's well written and won't bore you to death like the FAA-issued Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge and Airplane Flying Handbook.
