Default UAL Flight Diverted.

Anyone catch this on CNN

Heathrow and Gatwick have security problems today....

Heathrow flight diverted to Boston under F15 escort after pilot declares emergency after a disturbance. The woman that created the disturbance had several banned items that security failed to find in screening.

Gatwick had a child board a flight without a passport or boarding pass. The error was discovered by the F/A when the child didn't have a seat...

Probably a passenger disturbance, which happens daily in America.

I betchya the rest of the information is wht the news directors are putting out to keep people watching their channels and watching the commercials because it happened to be flying from London.

Airliners land short and go back to the gate because of pax problems a LOT more than people will believe.

Come to NetworkJC, I'll tell ya some stories!

And not all infants are ticketed. I'm not sure about international flights, but domestically, if you're a 'babe in arms', well, you're a 'babe in arms."

I'm not sure about whether or not a lap-child (child under 2) travelling internationally needs a ticket, but wouldn't that baby still be required to have a passport to enter another country?

Yes and Yes, delt with that 2 weeks ago when I came back to the States. Well I don't REALLY know if they need a ticket, I've seen both people buy a seat (I did, no way im holding an 8 month old for 22 frickin hours) as well as people who hold their child. If I remember right, I thought I saw somewhere, on Intl dlights, children under 2 still need a ticket, but domestic is free...

I used to travel on my dad's passport when I was a kid. I don't know if they still allow you to do that or not.

I think it depends on the airline. NWA allows lap infants on Int'l flights, but requires you to pay a fee equal to 10% of the value of the adult's ticket (they claim it is to cover the cost the airline incurs in processing immigration/customs/security paperwork).

I have no idea about the passport.

We flew united, here is thier policy

For international travel, a ticket must be purchased. Often a discounted fare will apply, depending on the international destination. One adult customer traveling with more than one infant must purchase an adjacent seat for each additional child, at the applicable fare. Additional children must be properly secured in their seats. A passenger must be at least 15 years old to hold an infant as a lap child.

Booking a seat for an infant
There are two options when traveling with an infant (child under 2 years of age):
  • Infant not occupying a seat (Lap child)
For travel within the U.S., between the U.S. and Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands and between the U.S. and Canada, infants are not required to occupy a seat. However, your reservation must be documented as having an infant in seat. If you decide to fly with an infant in your lap, book your reservation on united.com and then contact United Reservations to advise that an infant will be traveling on your itinerary.

For international travel, an infant may be required to have a ticket to travel as a lap child. Contact United Reservations for details on how to purchase a ticket for your infant.
  • Infant occupying a seat
For travel within the U.S., including Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, and between the U.S. and Canada, you may purchase a separate seat for your infant for increased comfort. Infants occupying a separate seat are subject to the full adult fare. To book a separate seat on united.com for your infant, include your infant in the total passenger count when choosing the number of travelers in the drop down menu.

I talked to a gate agent today in Boston. Basically, you can travel overseas with a 'babe in arms'/lap child without a passport as long as you have a birth certificate on hand. They're not 'ticketed' but they're issued a 'ticket' per se.

But then that always depends on where you're flying.

Oh, BTW, by the time we got there, the aircraft was finally moved off the runway. The sentiment is that the entire thing was way overblown. Largely media feeding on other media outlets with incorrect speculation fueled by anonymous telephone calls to the editor's desk with unconfirmed information. Yowza. Welcome to my world!
