Does anyone know the difference between a STC and Form 337. Are they the same thing? Any help would be great.

I'll give it a shot for you....the Form 337 is used to document major alterations and repairs. If a mechanic does certain repairs, it may require the 337 to be filled out and the work inspected by an I.A. who signs the 337. The 337 would then get sent to the FAA and would become part of the aircraft's historical records. Copies are also kept with the owner for hte aircraft records. Now, STC's are Supplemental Type Certificates that are approved by the FAA. A very common STC is the Peterson Aviation Auto Fuel STC. When you install a STC on an aircraft you are changing it from its original specs/design when the FAA certified it and will require you to fill out a Form 337 because of an alteration you are making to the aircraft. So...Form 337's are used by A&P's to document certain maintenance actions as per FAR Part 43 and for documentation/tracking of STC's installed on aircraft. Clear as mud? |
