Default Flying around Columbus, MS?

After my vaction in the desert, I'll be moving to Columbus, MS this fall. Does anyone have any info on FBO/Flight Schools in this area?

Thanks!

Well, there's a flight school in Columbus, and I believe there is one in Starkville (about 20 minutes down the road). Other than that.....well, there's really not much else in the area.

GTR was my home base. RAS is the FBO out at GTR....Mr Mickey the guy that runs it is a real nice guy. i suggest you fly out there. the FBO at UBS has cheaper rates but their airplanes are not maintained well at all. if you have any questions shoot me a pm since i lived there for 19 years

Ian said it right. You're options are GTR and Lowndes County Regional. I haven't flown with either, but I've heard people talk negatively about Lowndes County's planes. They're supposedly pretty badly maintained. Don't know from personal experience, just heard stories.

On the other hand, someone once told me that the rates to rent out of GTR were a little high, but that was because the aircraft have some pretty nice equipment. For example, they're 172 RG has an autopilot.

BTW, ricky, what are you coming to Columbus for?

its not a RG i wish it was. its a 1999 172 SP
112/hr wet
94/hr dry

it has the king ifr gps, and an auto pilot without altitude hold....a very nice plane, i have about 40 hours in that plane alone.

Thumbs up Re: Flying around Columbus, MS?

... or check with me since I flew on the non-mil side regularly when I went through UPT there several years ago.

Like has been mentioned, Lowndes county is probably your closest and cheapest bet BUT you get what you pay for. MX at the FBO at Lowndes county was a little on the shady side. I used to fly there at first, even though I had heard their MX wasn't the best. One time I rented one of their 152s and had a drop of about 250 on a mag check (AFTER re-doing a run-up), and that was the last time I flew there.

The rest of the time there I flew out of GTR at RAS aviation. They had a pretty decent set-up and pretty well kept planes. They were a little more expensive but the operation was just plain better. Matter of fact, I was down there in April to hang out with Fish314 in my old stomping grounds and I rented their 172SP for a little trip to Birmingham (wish they had an RG). Still a good operation and they have a website too - rasaviation.com. PM me if you have any more questions, I can provide some other info and give you the number the the guy running the show there at RAS Avition.

Wow, thanks for the input fella's. I've found some info on Accessible Aviation out at GTR. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Fish, let's just say we'll be talking on the radios in a little bit...

Again, thanks for all the replies and I hope you don't mind if I shoot a few of you a PM.

Carl Nuzzo runs that place. i have taken written tests out there, never flown his planes. i think he has somewhere arounda 1978 172R that is 105 wet or somewhere around there. RAS has a 152 that is 60 wet also.

Wish I had known all this back when I was at Mississippi State. Might have gotten my ratings then and saved some $$$.
