So what if anything happens if you land early? I assume the airport maintenance may not be too happy: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1078774/M/

I don't know for sure but I have a couple of guesses: 1. The approaches my not be TERPS'ed for you to land before the displaced threshold-- so you may be lower than they planned and have issues with obstacles on landing? 2. That part of the runway might not be stressed for landings, especially by big aircraft. I know that when I flew tankers we had to check before we went to a new location to make sure that the runway and taxiways were stressed for our weight and type of landing gear. Some taxiways we couldn't taxi on because of our weight. So maybe you would crack the pavement?

Isn't that a common occurance over there though? maybe not to landed on the threshold, but they do some extremely low approaches http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QptC9lYP4Ww http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez4Fdj93eVs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvNONncieu0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJhZA4aY2N0 |

Well if there is a "displaced threshold" you are not supposed to land before it, but you can take off on it. I've never seen anyone land before the displaced threshold, but I would imagine that it's a pretty common mistake. Don't know what the repurcussions are.

This is why I hated landing in St. Maarten. If you plant one, some camera-monkey is bound to have a photo up on airliners within hours so a bunch of a.net dorks who have never flown an airplane can give in-depth analysis on where you screwed up. Of course, landing a hundred feet short of the threshold is a bit bigger screw-up than most of us make. I'd be very nervous if I were those pilots, because I guarantee you someone from a.net will email that to KLM. |

It must have been the FO's leg.

I see airplanes land short of the threshold about once per week. I'm talking about cessna's and piper's though, not 727's.

I train at Sanford International airport and got to witness this happen before! Cesna 172 came in low and landed about 15 feet short of the runway on the displaced threshold and the tower immediately made him change frequencies so someone could talk to him about it! I wanted to switch frequencies to listen to this guy get his ass chewed out but the controller made me take of when the guy cleared the runway!

There is one guy in an experimental that lands on the chevrons at Castle and gets off at the very first taxiway. I can't just assume that it was the FO's leg. I was on a UAL777 flight where the Captain was the pilot flying (I could tell because the FO did the communications on Channel 9) and the Captain ended up coming in too high and fast at KORD and ended up going missed on a visual approach! I'm sure the captain might have been embarrassed because right after the tower handed us back over to Chicago Approach, channel 9 was turned off. Neil
