Just wondering if any of you'd heard what level of automation the new generation of airliners are likely to have, e.g. the 787 and the A380? That is, how much more automated are these aircraft over the current fleet of airliners (744, CRJ, A340, etc), if any? Obviously, it's different aircraft to aircraft, but ... Just an idle curiosity, as the issue of automation has been a source of some discussion lately. |

Really with auto throttles and autoland features (and even "auto taxi" on some of the 777) I'm not sure how much more automation they can cram in. What they can improve is the interface and design of the systems.

Any idea how the auto-taxi works? Would that use the INS like inflight?

No such thing as "auto-taxi" on the 777. There is the option for a moving map display in the EFB for taxiing. That can be handy for low visibility taxi operations. The 787 Flight Guidance and Autopilot will be very similar to the 777. Perhaps some improvements, but it is hard to improve upon something that is already so good. Boeing want a very short transition course from the 777 to 787 as that will improve sales prospects. The rumour is 4 days training will be all that is required so the two must be very similar to facilitate that. TP TP | |

My bad. I know Boeing was messing around with the auto taxi feature. Maybe I was thinking that it will maintain rollout guidence on low vis approaches. I even remember reading somewhere it will make the turn off the runway. Either way, I've got auto taxi in the CRJ anyways. |
