Default Aviation Watches

What type of watch do you wear when you fly? Lets see them.

here is mine.

My grandfather used to be a pilot and just passed on a Breitling watch to me.

1974 Breitling Long Playing Chronograph. (sorry for the big picture. i couldnt figure out how to make it smaller)

Skagen titanium. No fancy dials, lightweight case, simple, less than $100 online.

Nice watch, Steve. You pick that up locally or did you snag it online? I love my Fossil watch, but it's showing it's age and will probably get retired here sometime soon.

I use some cheap watch that I can scratch up and beat around the bush. Bought it for like 18 bones 6 years back. Stills tickin.

I look straight down and compare the distance of my shadow from where I really am above the ground. It gets kind of tough though as you have to calculate your altitude, distance from the equator, and time of year but it gets the job done. That is, unless it gets cloudy or dark.

on a serious note I think for an airline pilot one should have a $5,000 Cartier Dumont, and or rolex titanium chorneograph with the three spearate dials.

NO, I don't wear it when I fly but sometimes I'll wear it when I go out and it makes a sweet conversation piece. Wish I had an original "Swatch Guard" for it.

When I fly I wear a Timex ($40 at Target) that has a second time zone feature in the digital display. I keep local time on the hands, zulu time in the display. I'd say that if you're going to fly professionally, a second (zulu) time zone feature on the watch is an EXTREMELY handy feature.

Titanium Citizen Skyhawk here. It's an eco-drive so no batteries to ever die on you. As long as it has light at some point in the day, it'll keep going. I too, like others above, use the secondary dials for Zulu time. It's certainly not necessary, but it sure is convienient to have both available at a glance.

And when all else fails, I use the E6B on the bezel to figure if I'm gonna have enough gas to get me home.

Grrrr......how do I get the picture to show up in the post w/out having it be an attachment. My little brain can't figure it out.

I have a trusty watch I bought for $15 at Target. Cheap, doesn't matter if it gets smashed/scratched, and runs for years on the same battery.

Bill went for years with no watch, I finally bought him a mid-range Seiko at JcPenney one year for Valentine's Day. He didn't want an expensive one that he'd be afraid to damage in daily use.

Which reminds me of a funny story that happened to Bill when he was still watch-less on the 727 (F/E) with TWA. The F/O was talking about watches and how the bigger the guy's watch the more he was compensating for lack of size in, um, other areas. The CA held out his wrist with his massive aviatior's watch and said "hey now! what are you saying there!", and Bill holds out his watch-less arms and says "you'll notice I'm not wearing a watch"
