Default Mystery...

Tail from Fla. crash jet found in Ireland

NORFOLK, Va., May 10 (UPI) -- Scientists are baffled by the discovery on an

Irish shore of a 10-foot piece of tail section from a U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat

jet that crashed in Florida in 2002.

The Irish Examiner reported a retired commercial airline pilot found the

triangular piece of vertical stabilizer on Friday, and feared it had come

off a plane in-flight.

However, its markings were remarkably intact, and it was traced to a flight

out of Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach that crashed off Florida

on Oct. 3, 2002. The 2-man crew ejected and received only minor injuries.

The man who found the piece said the metal tail looked new and showed no

barnacles or corrosion.

"It is quite a substantial piece," he told the Irish Examiner. "You would

think it would have sunk, but the inside is layered with honeycomb material,

and that could have made it buoyant."

But how it got to the beach 4,900 miles away has everyone guessing, the

Virginian-Pilot reported.

"Nobody has any idea how that vertical stabilizer got all the way up there,"

said Cmdr. Chris Sims, a spokesman for the Atlantic Fleet Naval Air Force in

Norfolk.

There have been boats that have sunken of the FL coast and ened up off the shores of England, Ireland, etc. Its those strong underwater currents. Pretty crazy.

Why would he think it was from an Tomcat in flight? I thought the F-14 had been retired? Are they still flying?

I'm not a scientist, but I'm guessing it floated there. Maybe they're talking to the wrong kind of scientists.

I was thinking the same thing. Anyone who has a blind bit of knowledge about ocean currents has heard of the North Atlantic Current. If it floats, and you drop it in the ocean near Florida, it's going to the UK. Lookie:

That was like a two second Google search. I fail to see the bafflement.
