I just want some opinions on this. If you are not planning on making aviation a career and you are not rolling in the money, whats the point of having a PPL?

In my opinion, earning a PPL has many benefits. Its challenging, rewarding, teaches responsibility (for the airplane, yourself, and your passengers), its a symbol of freedom, and its FUN!!!

I am just trying to see how much people with only a PPL and do not own their own plane actually use their privilage. Is it worth the $$$ to have a neat hobby?

He got his private license because he LOVES it. He doesn't have a lot of money to spend, but he saves up here and there enough to fly a couple hours per month. He eventually wants to work his way up and become a CFI, not because he wants to make a career out of it, but because he has so much fun with it. In my opinion, that type of person is the ideal person to get a license for a hobby. They have the passion to stay involved with it. Now, there's nothing wrong with getting your license even if you don't have that passion--as has been mentioned, it's a good challenge, teaches you a lot, etc. But I have to warn you, you probably will give up flying shortly after you get your license. If it's "just a hobby" to you, you probably won't be able to justify spending $70-$100/hour on "just a hobby." I don't mean to discourage you, I'm just relating what I've seen happen to many other pilots in similar situations. If money is somewhat tight, flying gets cut. | |

It's fun, it's a huge challenge, and it's cool. If you look at what people spend on hobby's such as Harley's or muscle cars, owning a small plane for fun hobby is a lot more realistic than most people think. |

I got my PPL Airplane just to fly for fun. I wanted a different perspective from helicopters and didn't want to abide by the Army's scheduling and rules when I wanted to fly. Plus I wanted to fly around my friends and family. After I got my PPL, I sort of got addicted to ratings. So I still fly around for fun, and CFI for fun. Point is, once you get your PPL you never know where it might lead.
