Default Fuel Surcharges??

Just curious if other FBO's out there are charging fuel surcharges to offset the rising fuel costs?? My FBO started charging additinal fuel surcharges about 6 or 7 months ago and just raised the surcharge this past week again. For a Piper Warrior the fuel surcharge is $12/hour on top of the rental charge. For the Eclipses that I normally fly it's only $7/hour.

What's everyone else seeing out there??

It's actually a good thing.

If the cost of rentals didn't increase with the price of fuel, it's either a fuel surcharge or less maintenance!

And as a CFI, helping my paycheck too

Were ranging from $4-$12 (152's - Piper Seneca respectively). Here at KPAE, we've been above the $4.50/gal for avgas for quite a while. Whats everybody else seeing?

Squad 2 out in RHV just ups the rental rates. $76 for a 152, $120 range for 172sp, $210 for the Duchess.

Last time I fueled it was $3.99, but that was last week, it's probably $4.10ish now.

Why the "fuel surcharge" anyway? Is it just a way for them to increase the rental rate without calling it that? Why don't they just do a rate increase and be done with it? Seems like a "shady" way of just raising the rental rate to me, when that is effectively what you have done.

I completely agree! Why not just raise the rates. It seems to me we're advertsing a "reasonable" rate per hour, and once the customer gets used to it and likes it, we say, "oh yeah, ands its like a 8% fuel surcharge... no big deal." And they are okay with it because all they remember is that original rate.

I would speculate that with the volitile nature of fuel these days, it would be more of a pain in the arse to redo your rental rates on a weekly basis and have to change websites, printed literature, etc.

They ought to just rent them out dry and then you pay for what you use, but that would probably end up being a similar pain...

Because my flight school actually LOWERS or ELIMINATES the fuel surcharge when fuel prices go down again.

As does mine... but then again you could just lower your rate when (IF) the fuel rates decline.

The thing is, because of inflation prices always go up. What, are we going to keep 2006 prices for the next 20 years and eventually pay a 120% "fuel" charge in 2026? (Extreme, I know, but you get the idea.

The thing they have to ask themselves is, are fuel prices really going to come down that much again?

Must be nice to fly with a school who's owner is not out to bend you over! The typical process goes like this at my school...fuel prices go up...fuel surcharge gets added....fuel prices go down....the fuel surcharge gets dropped but magically all the rental rates go up by the same amount...fuel goes up...and over and over and over.

I would say that the rental pice for the Diamond Eclipse has gone from $78/hour about a month ago to about $105/hour today. They're even getting over $100/hour for a Warrior II now. A VFR only Warrior II that has about 9,000 hours on it.

OK well maybe not 9,000. But you get the idea....they are by no means nice Warriors. Beat up interiors, just the basic avionics...single nav/com that work "most" of the time....

LOl, wasnt sure if you were serious or not. Yeah, I wonder about our tomahawks, there pretty basic, I think Its worth it to pay more for a nice, newer aircraft. I cant wait to fly a 172, sounds stupid and like 737 should replace 172, but hey, short term goal

I wish our FBO had newer a/c, not tired old pipers, but they fly, I guess.
