| anyone under 21 sending resumes to regionals? I will be done with my 4 year degree at the beginning of July. Only problem I have is that I don't turn 21 till mid july. I am trying to send out resumes now in hopes of a class date just after I graduate. The ATP written is required by all the regionals I am looking at... I e-mailed ATP about the all atp written program (been hearing great reviews) and asked about the 21yr old prereq. The e-mail I recieved says you must be 21 to take the written, even if you are going to a 121 carrier where it doesnt theoretically expire. Has anyone run into this problem? or have a solution? |

| Re: anyone under 21 sending resumes to regionals? if you have some major flight time, wow them in an interview, or have some really good connections, it is very difficult. At Colgan there are a *few*- very few that are under 21. They were either in the right place at the right time, or had already built an exceptional background. Keep in mind that when a company looks at you, they want to see a mature, respectable adult for them to invest their money in. Training for the right seat can cost quite a bit of money (sim time, hotel, travel, paying you while you train).
Anyhow, thats my experience when talking to my fellow coworkers.
As far as the written goes, 21 is the limit, but once you are hired by a 121 carrier it does not expire for 5 years (I'm not sure if this is correct, something like that).
Hopefully this was helpful!

| Re: anyone under 21 sending resumes to regionals? You can always spend the next 2 months working on your 4 year, then take the ATP written. Problem solved.

| Re: anyone under 21 sending resumes to regionals? I would take a couple of months off and see Europe on the cheap. Youth hostels for a roof over your head, Europass for transportation, and bread from the street vendors for a meal. You'll have the time of your life.
You will never, ever, ever regret taking those few months off from your career path.

If you become unemployed after the standard 2 year expiration on written exam the exam will then need to be retaken before getting your ATP. |

| Re: anyone under 21 sending resumes to regionals? It's all about how much effort you put into it.
I graduated with a four year degree from a respectable University at the age of 20. It took me two years, a fall term and a couple of summer classes, and I was able to fly on the side as well.
Obviously it's a lot of work... but hey 2 years for a 4 year aint bad!
I could probably have attended a ATP tryp school for my CFI's and maybe some multi time building and had an interview before age 21.
It's all a question of motivation and making the most out of what options you have. If your High School offers AP's... Take them! they speed up the degree process! If your college offers summer courses... Take them! If your flight school is willing to accomodate your strange hours of availability... Work with them!
It's not gonna be easy, but you can fly through this stuff in no time if you just stay focused and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way...
ok... my rant is over |

| Re: anyone under 21 sending resumes to regionals? I'd definetely start school and have a life. Those 21yr olds at Regionals with no college will regret it when they end up with all the minimums for a major with no degree. It will be hard to hit the books again, trust me. For the 21 yr olds WITH the degree I say GOOD job, especially one in a non-aviation field.
There are so many different paths that it really doesn't matter how old you are. I'm 21 and am only about half way through instrument training with 1 yr left for a BA in Business. I'll be 22, maybe 23 when I graduate with, I hope a Commercial license and a few Part 91 King Air gigs awaiting me. Skip those darn Regionals! It's who you know in this business.
You can be 30 yrs old, go to ATP for 3 months, instruct for a year and meet Regional req'ts in a little over a year. Do the time and log the PIC, do some networking and make it to a major before 40 and retire at 60. All while having a life. What more does one need?
