| Junior Member | I agree with you Doug, you should never give up on telling people to get an education; it’s the number 1 thing people should worry about. Especially in this field if you want to get on with a major some day. I tell some of my friends the same that to stay in school, they look at me like I’m crazy. I’m 18 right now with one part time job, a part time flying job, and cfi. I love my job and would not trade it for anything, but looking back I still wish I could have just been one of those college kids who just goes to school and has fun during these years. But I should have my AS degree by the time I am 19, and hopefully my BS well before I’m 21. But by all means no one should have to work all day and go to school at night when there under 21 because that’s not the life people should be having at those years of life, they should be having fun. I bet anyone who looks back at those years of their life would be much happier if all they were doing was partying and just having fun, not working all the time. |

| Senior Member | Well, I listened Doug. It was actually while I was building time in the ATP program (having grown so itchy to fly that I had plunged into a fast-track program prior to any college), and my flight partner and I were hanging around the ASU campus near the PHX location, when my partner said, "This is where you belong." I was further enlightened while cruising at altitude, staring blindly at instruments, getting jostled around by turbulence, that this is what I would be doing for the rest of my professional life ... So it was while I was in the thick of my flight training that I realized I wanted to go to college. Ironical, eh? And I couldn't be happier. |

| "I preach and preach and preach about getting a college education but no one listens" I once worked for a third level supplemental cargo outfit flying Convairs. This was during the late 80's when times were pretty good in the airline pilot hiring biz. It was interesting to see what seperated the "lifers", who were stuck at that level, and those who moved on to bigger and better things. Had nothing to do with piloting ability, skill, or experience. The "lifers" were the guys without degrees. If you're aiming for the top of the profession, you better figure out a way to check that square. |

| Agent Smith | Before I leave for work, here's the next answer: "Yeah, but Bill Gates and your millionaire uncle aren't competing for a job at Fed Ex" (someone invariably says "You can be a success without a degree...Bill Gates... My millionaire uncle... yadda yadda yadda")

| Senior Member | Question: why do kids see their under-21 counterparts that have a regional job as competition... because of their age? It is visible at some airports where there are quite a few young Mesa FOs. The "Wow! he's only 21" expression has been heard around those parts a few times, and get just a slightly raised eyebrow and dumb look from captains that have been in the industry for a couple of years.

| Well this topic went a bit off from where I started it with. For those who are just looking through the post- I am all for education and having a good time doing it. I have been in school for 3 years and have just a couple summer classes to put the degree in the resume. On top of that I began flying as soon as I could start driving and since I arrived at school and had my multi/commercial I realised that every job from here on out should be in the aviaiton field. A line job is good while you do the cfi/II/MEI and just getting flight time with the base customers will bring on some good connections for the initial time and experience. From there (and the past year and a half) its been school and instructing. Some say you can't have fun but I seem to party hardy at least a couple times a week. I am trying to get a 121 job and will be doing my MBA online. I guess the goal is to be at a major by age 25. I have had a blast so far, and hope to be in a position to have more fun later in life with a wife and kids. Time will tell. Moral of this reply is to let the people just starting out in the profession to know that you can bust your ass and still have fun. Being young in the industry is DEFINATELY a good thing. Companies know you will be around for a while and it shows you have good work ethic for being years ahead of the rest of the competition. |

| Im 20 I have my AS degree right now and plan on starting the UVSC online stuff in a few weeks. I have an interview with Express Jet and one at Colgan. XJ was a walk in Colgan was on my own but i did work for them as a ramp agent at ACT while i was in school so maybe you could consider it "walked in" My plan is to just get comfy in the right seat and finish my bachelors online slowly i cant see my self at a major any sooner than 6 years minimum so i feel like i have that much time to get it done. As far as the whole young pilot stuff it sucks, ive lost a handfull of fun flights in peoples Bonanzas and Barrons because of my age. Its ok though one guy who was 59 grabbed one of those slots flying a barron the had like 900/60 to my 800/170 and got a violaton for some reason or another because he said he couldnt keep up with the airplane. No offense at all to Older pilots the best pilots i have ever flown with were older gentleman, but it sucks when most people wont even give us younger guys a chance even though we may be more qualified. I dont understand all my students that are under 30 seem to learn to fly twice as quickly as guys over 30, for the most part. Its always going to be an ongoing battle though the young quick sharp pilots vs the older supposedly more expierienced just because he/she is older pilot. |

27 is a heck.......no let me back track..........27 is a hel*l of a lot different than 19.....or 20......or 21.....or 22.......or 23. Inmy opinion I've matured more in the last 5 years, than I have in the previous 15 before that. | |

| Guys, as an upadate... I have been 21 now for a month and just completed an interview with Pinnacle (yesterday- I feel it went great!) and now I got a call from ASA.. I was definately the youngest one out of the group at pinnacle to interview by at 3 years. I dont think age is as much of a big deal, the regionals are now just using the ATP written as a benchmark requirement (aka- make you be 21). Also I am below the mins- I only have 875tt/240multi. |
