I sent him a message, saying he was an idiot, and should seek training- here was his response, as well as mine. ----- from: him thanks for the kind words please remember the Wright bors had no training My reply: Please remember the time. The FAA has established regulations to keep flying safe. Rules that all certificated pilots are required to learn, and practice. When you tool around in an ultralight, without any training, or knowledge, you hurt everyone. I read that you almost got hit by a plane at the airport? Do you know what kind of right of way you are supposed to yield? What would you do if you did collide? That is if you survived. It not only is a danger to all other pilots, you're hurting the image of general aviation. Most people are scared of small airplanes because of what they hear from the media. If you make the news because of an accident, and they find out you have no training, it would wound GA more. I think it's great that you want to fly, but please, PLEASE seek training. You aren't just putting yourself at risk, your putting other pilots at risk too. People with families. |

I saw that he is now taking training, butit still makes you kinda cringe to see that...it's just horribly to imagine how that could have turned out if there had abeen a strong xwind. Didn't it look like the guys mowing the rwy were drinking beer?

This looked like a meeting of the local Mensa society. Motto: Woo Hoo he's dead, more beer for me!

You know, it's convievable that he didn't break any laws at all. Ultralight operation is pretty much "wild west" compared to part 91 stuff. But I've lost my copy of the FARS, and am too lazy to look it up online. Something about a drivers liscense? Did anyone else notice that the stick seemed to be liked to the rudder in lieu of aileron control? |

Yeah not the cleverest thing - but I am sure it is very common among the ulrtalight crowd. Many dorky reponses from aviation dorks though - You're an idiot. Please seek training, or stop flying. I don't want idiots with no training in the skies with me. There are a lot of rules and regs that you are violating and should probably learn just to save your ass. I would suggest get your training or if you can't affoard that pick up a book calld FARAIM. It contains all rules and regs to aviation. Umm what are they going to do - revoke his license??? |

Ok, I'm not so lazy after all. Here's the dope on ultralights: http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text...1.3.16&idno=14 Looks like the only FAR That the guy may have broke is "operation over congested areas". And honestly, unless he hit a pedestrian, I don't see how that thing could harm anyone but the pilot. So maybe he's not so dumb after all? He did seem to handle it pretty well, considering it was his initial solo... |

HA! That guy, "Bit the big one." I wonder how much that 15 second flight cost him.

Totally not surprised that was in Monroe, NC. Monroe is the epitome of all the southern redneck stereotypes you've ever heard. Not totally related, but along the lines of stupid "pilots". I was flying with a student the other day, on his first lesson. So we're working climbs, descents, turns, etc. Scanning for traffic, I look over my right shoulder, and there's a blue and yellow biplane (aerobatic type), 50 yds or less off our wing, flying formation on us!! At first, I thought maybe he was just on his way somewhere, neither of us saw each other, and we just happened to get that close w/o colliding. So initiate a descending left turn away from him............and he follows! For about 5-10 mins, this guy followed my every move, staying just off our wing. It got to the point where I thought we had something visibly wrong with the plane, and he was trying to warn us, it was just that unbelievable to me someone would do this for fun! Wish I had, but I never got a tail number.

Are you guys not catching that he didn't really do anything wrong (save for the congested-area bit...)? In fact, he did pretty good for a first-timer. I don't see the beef. |

I don't believe the the "no training" thing. This guy did an excellent job flying that thing. I mean, he took off and immediately established VY. Then after safe altitude he established climb power for the "noise abatement" procedure. This guy definitely had some training. HS |

That's so old I had to Google it to figure out what the heck you were talking about...never knew her name. And, yes I'm old enough to remember the commercial (sadly). Learned something new again today.

That was funny... He flew that thing just fine and didn't need any training. You guys are just mad cause you dropped a fortune on your flight training and this hick goes out and did it for free on his own. haha... It's a new version of the wright brothers, with mullets, booze, and smokes. |

There is no way I would get in an ultralight. Just ask Mr Walton about them.

This is a classic "Hold my beer and watch this." Pretty stupid, but good for a laugh for those of us in aviation. I like how he ended it "I told you I could fly that @$%#."
