MINNEAPOLIS - Northwest Airlines Corp. pilots approved a package of deep pay cuts and other concessions on Wednesday that the bankrupt carrier said it needs to reorganize. About 63 percent of Northwest’s 4,800 pilots voted to approve the pact. Some union leaders had publicly called on pilots to reject the contract and hold out for a better deal. The Northwest branch of the Air Line Pilots Association said the new contract will not take effect until other unions ratify their own contracts. Baggage handlers voted down Northwest’s wage-cut proposal, and a trial is set to begin in bankruptcy court May 15 to determine whether Northwest can throw out that contract and impose its own terms. Flight attendants will be voting through June 6 on their own wage-cut proposal. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12611988/

Do we know how much they gave up? This is the worst industry i have ever seen. Why dont the airlines increase prices of tickets to stay alive. If the cost of cheese goes up at Mcdonalds, they dont cut the employees pay, they increase the price of the cheeseburger. Seems logical to me! |

Essentially, this will completely get rid of NWA's DC-9 fleet and the associated jobs. But don't fret - oh no - they will still have jobs - working for regional wages vs. mainline wages at compass. Sweet deal, huh? Mid-Atlantic II.

What percentage of their fleet is DC9's and how mony pilots there will go back to the "regionals", "Compass". What is to keep the arline from going to all rjs and making the whole thing regional pay. |

To answer your second question, the word "scope" is what limits it. In their former contract, I believe the only aircraft permitted to operate under the NWA banner were <51 seats, with the exception of a few avros operated by mesaba. Now, NWA can farm out up to 90 seat 51-76 seat aircraft provided they fly them under their affiliate banner. See the TA here NWA guys also keep the 23.9% paycut, along with other QOL issues such as 50% pay for deadheads, less vacation, less days off, credit on a per trip vs. per leg basis (ie if you overblock on one leg by 5 minutes, and underblock on another, they will cancel each other out vs. at AWAC you can underblock every leg by 30 minutes but over block one leg by 5 minutes and you'd be +:05 for the trip). EDIT: Personally, unless airline profits come back they start making a killing again, I can see the majors simply doing international flying and farming out their domestic feed. Mesa already once turned down their 737's, but it was because of pay issues. Once they get 'em on property our careers are toast...more airlines will be sure to follow.

I'd be interested to see an age breakdown of the votes. I know it's probably not available, but it would be interesting to see.
