Default Air Taxi Article....

http://money.cnn.com/2006/04/27/tech...0427/index.htm

Anyone care to comment? CNN makes it seem like these VLJ's which have a payload of next to nothing will be the FUTURE... what do you guys think of the company mentioned in the article? Sink or swim?

I think if this company makes it, the skies will be very crowded. They seem to have a good business plan, from what it says, and if they did their research right, it could be good for them. Time will tell.

The article sounds like the author is a little afraid of flying...mentioning turbulence bringing everybody down and scaring the walking cargo. Go figure...I could be wrong, but I don't think turbulence brought Buddy Holly's airplane down. Of course, La Bamba showed it getting shot down or something (remember the plane blowing up in the sky).

From their website here are the mins for those that are interested:

# 3,000 hours flight time (excluding helicopter, simulator and flight engineer time)
# 1,000 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC)
# 1,000 hours multi-engine
# 500 hours turbo-jet PIC

They want 500 jet PIC right now. Granted these initial guys will be at the top of the company. But is jet PIC really necessary? basicly they want RJ captains now to make a lateral move into smaller equipment. I wonder if they will have a hard time finding people to make that move?

What are the FAA mins for a 135 FO? this might be something I could see myself doing for a while to get my Turbine PIC.

With an already small load, I can't see them using FO's but I could be wrong. I would think this operation would be all single pilot if the FAA and pax are ok with it.

Rumor has it Quest Diagnostics is looking to replace their whole fleet with these VLJ's too. Maybe then they'd look at my resume...

I love the part about VLJ's not having a bathroom....I used to hear the same arguement made about Metroliners, 1900's, etc...

My company has an order for three Eclipse 500's and we're basing out business plan on this same market as well...

from the http://www.dayjet.com website:

Will you fly with one or two pilots?

While the Eclipse 500 very light jet aircraft will be certified for single pilot operations, DayJet will initially operate each aircraft with two pilots.
