| Agent Smith | Publicity. There might be a couple seats on a A321 available at that rate on some days. But it'll drive thousands of people to their website to look for the fare from the 'viral advertising'. Look, they just got a few thousand in free publicity on the website! Then there's a slight chance a good percentage of those thousands that would have never considered Spirit and perhaps a percentage of *those* people that say, "Ahh, $349 to DTW ain't all that bad, let's book it!". Lose a seat or two out of the revenue stream, crazy viral advertising ("Spirit's gone nuts!" the local news talking heads say) and they make phat loot.

| hey i got a better one. a commutter up here was doing penny fairs. im dead serious. one penny to fly one way. the reason for this is publicity kind of but more importantly is the way mail (specifically by-pass mail) is distriuted. an airline gets a certain share of it based on how many passengers they move and also how much they can move. so if you move more people then you get a larger share of the mail. and mail pays the big bucks. it didnt last long because all the other companies went to the people that make decisions (the MAN) and complained enough that they stopped. so anyway thats my contribution for tonight

| I wonder how long till' they PAY people to fly? It would be a very sad thing to see. Pilots paying to fly and passengers getting paid to fly. (Will probably never happen. Just throwing it out there. Consider that the first part already exists though. So it's not that impossible.) |

| I actually thought the 9/11 promotion was pretty neat. I remember loads were really low for that day. I guess I could understand why, but as I recall it got people flying. They had a full boat on most of their flights. You gotta think though, they got a ton of pub from that one, and most of those people who flew for free that day probably paid double for their one way fare back to where they came from a few days after that. Southwest has the type of promotion perfected, you don't think everyone on that 737 is paying $69 for their flight? Maybe 5-10 of those 130+ pax are but the rest... Not even close. Frontier was booked up, so I looked into flying on Southwest from DEN to BWI a while back and it would have cost me over $400 for a r/t... So much for the $200 they advertised on the commercial. |
