Im considering doin a Bachelors in criminal justice next year at my local community college, is it necessary to have an aviation degree, or will i get hired with my ratings and a B.A in a random field? Also, is it vital that i get an MEI or is a CFII sufficient?

They dont give a rats behind what your degree is, just the fact that you have one. Thats it, simple.

Why not be a cop if you have a degree in criminal justice? Cops in my city start off at 50 grand per year and move up from there. It will take you almost a decade to begin making that much in aviation. Also, you could possibly look into flying for the force if you get hired in a major city that has an aviation branch of the PD. That would be the way to go IMO.

Being a cop sucks. Thats why. And if you stay out of the regionals you can make 50K in less then a decade.

I have a degree in Criminal Justice. Go for it. Law Enforcement is always looking for people and I almost went for a profession in five-o. The money is there. My vote says do it.

It's not.....learn from my mistake and get something completely different. I went to a different school than some of my best friends and in the end, I would be in the same position I am now, had I gone to their college!

However, I'd suggest getting a degree in your second career choice. if I had studied computer science, I could crank out projects a lot faster rather than spending days googling crap and posting questions on forums based in Chechnya on how to do things.

Lol, i used the search but its sometimes hard to get a topic with the answer you need. Anyway thanks all. Good info here, i think thats what i'll do, get a degree at a local school, but i just need to find an fbo nearby, which right now seems unlikely.

Im in lower NY, theres alot of schools in New Jersey and in the lower states, but NY has very few, prob because of 9/11. The nearest one is 30 minutes away, so i'll end up paying for it big time in gas. Just out of curiosity where would you guys cut the limit on a ppl cert fee, $5000 or more around $8000?

More like $8,000. My FBO quotes $5,000, but it's a crap shoot between $5,000 and $8,000. I've got one student that'll do it in UNDER $5,000, but one that's going to blow through that.

Some of the reputable university aviation programs do provide an outstanding foundation in the education of a pilot. Some will offer a two year associate degree program...where essentially you earn your certification through commercial pilot. At my airline they did not start hiring civilian pilots in any substantial numbers until the mid '90s. Part of this reason was that the company felt that they could not substantiate the pilot applicant's quality of training. Military trained pilots were a known quantity...and everyone knows exactly what level of proficiency was attained during initial pilot training. If a civilian pilot earned his/her ratings down at the FBO...well...who knows what kind of training they were getting. Could've been good...could've been poor...who knows? Learning to fly at a reputable school eliminates some of the guesswork for the airline hiring department as to what type of education an applicant received while learning to fly. I think some airlines will view a university aviation degree in a favorable light. When I interviewed at Delta...it seemed to be a positive part of the interview. Having said that...I don't think the aviation degree will make you or break you in the industry. It may provide a slight edge during a job interview. More importantly...for an individual...is to educate/prepare yourself for a career outside/alongside aviation. Even if all you want to do is work in aviation...there is a good chance over the next 40 years that your employment in aviation will be temporarily or permanently interrupted. So be prepared for that interruption. Intellectually, an aviation degree is very manageable. It will take some dedication to complete...and everyone learns to fly at a somewhat different pace. I might suggest enrolling in a 2 year aviation degree program to earn those certificates...and concurrently earning a 4 year degree in a less specialized discipline. As with all education...make sure it is preparing you for success. There's a lot of educated derelicts out there. A college degree does not automatically prepare you for a career. That's your job...to ensure that the degree is preparing you to meet your future objectives. | |
