KGGG 221353Z 00000KT M1/4SM FG VV001 16/16 A3010 RMK AO2 SLP190 T01610156 Well, after my 8:54 rest (which includes a 20 min van ride in each direction) it was off to the airport. There was a bit of fog this morning, but we went ahead and went through the motions; it seemed to be getting better. We decided that we would go hold short of the runway to wait for the RVR to raise up to 1600, but alas it wasn't meant to be. It actually seemed to be getting better, going from 600 to about 900 before it got MUCH worse. From the hold short line, we couldn't see the runway numbers. Eventually, we had to return to the gate because fuel was an issue so we taxiied very slowly towards the ramp. When we finally got there though, we literally couldn't see the parking spot. After a few seconds sitting there, we saw a couple rampers come out of the mist to guide us in. It was very surreal, kind of like being inside of a humidifier. Once the fog did lift, we looked back to the spot where we had stopped and it was only 100' away or less! Our next two flights, a Waco turn, got reassigned to a reserve crew so I ended up getting off a little early. But the best part is I still got paid for those two flights plus the flight back to DFW plus all the time that we were holding short. So, when people talk about "work rules", this is what they mean (among other things). Had I been working for another company(s), I would have not only been sitting there at GGG not getting paid, but I would have lost a couple hours of pay for the removed trip to Waco. Now if we could only get Trip and Duty rigs like AWAC... (and longer overnights!) |

But back on topic, interesting story, I'm a big fan of dense fog. It's just weird to only be able to see 500 feet.

Seriously, that was the worse I've ever seen. It really was only about 100' vis. and I'm not stretching the truth. And then 15 min. later (after we parked and refueled of course) it's gone.

I thought it was funny going through upgrade training how we practice 500 RVR takeoffs, and are thus legal to do them at some airports. Yet, when we practice rejected takeoffs just before V1, the vis is 2400 RVR. Something is very, very, wrong with that. I think we should either be demonstrating rejects at 500 RVR or we shouldn't be doing them in the first place.... By the way, you can't see ##### at 500 RVR, especially at 140 knots... |

If you spent any time in the San Joaquin valley, dense fog is like 10 foot visibility!
