Question Position and hold gone or not?

So has anyone ever gotten any definitive answers about the whole end of being cleared into position and hold? I remember the mention of March 20 as a date for that to take effect. There have been several mentions in other threads as well but no one ever seemed to have an answer.

For what it's worth, I've noticed over the past two weeks that it didn't stopp at Dulles, it's DC no surprise there. However, it didn't stop in l'il old Charlottesvile (CHO) either. Did this policy just kinda get swept under the rug or delayed or has it actually been implememted in some places?

From what I understood it is not allowed unless the airport manager wrote a letter requesting its use at their airport. If justified and approved than permission was granted.

At LVK they are still giving out posistion and holds all the time.

I was at a few airports over the last few days that were announcing, either over ATIS or through notices posted at the FBOs, that TIPH operations were no longer being used at that airport. No explanations given, but March 20th was the effective date. I didn't pay attention to which airports were or were not using it.

Question

Does this rule apply to uncontrolled airports as well?

We had a Skywest airplane landed on back in 1991. A USAir 737 landed on top of it while it was in position and holding on 24L. Everyone on the Metro died. Some on the 737 didn't make it either.
About a month ago, a Southwest 737 was cleared to land on 24L, and a Skywest Brasilia was instructed to position and hold on 24L. The Skywest crew noticed the B737 on short final for 24L and immediately stopped just shy of getting hit yet once again. Because of that incident, at the same airport, its my opinion that you will no longer see position and hold clearances. Kudos to the SKYW crew.

How do position and holds work at uncontrolled airports?

At your own risk. I wouldn't do it, some yahoo might land on you and you wouldn't see them.

You taxi on to the runway, turn away from potentially incoming traffic with no one watching your back, and pray like heck that no one is coming, or if they are, that they see you and decide to go-around instead of messing up your nice clean seats.

That is one of my number 1 big time student pet peeves. Hold short of the runway until is it clear and then go take off. I don't care if the previous landing traffic takes 10 minutes to roll out to the end, back taxi, and turn off. Make sure the runway is clear, make sure the final is clear, then cross the hold short line and go take off.

Position and hold is still in use at BWI, by the way.

I really couldn't tell ya what the deal is. Last night in CLE the guy was working ground/clearance/and tower and gave me TIPH behind a SWA. Go figure. I've been receiving it regularly, but some places have told me they no longer have authorization to do it (LCK, our home airport doesn't allow it any more...just cleared for takeoff). I had heard they had to have certain numbers in the tower (as in separate ground/tower people) but that's not what I've seen.

Go figure.

In CHA yesterday morning, tower told a Challenger no more TIPH, but when we got to Boise we got a TIPH clearance. I don't think they can get rid of it completely at some airports. FLL for example would be a nightmare if they couldn't do TIPH. I don't think it's is dangerous at a controlled airport...it's all about .

I know you aren't casting any blame with your post, but that accident, for those who don't know, has more to the story. It was night time and the Metroliner was at an intersection. If you have ever tried to pick out a Metro at night amongst the runway lights it is darn near impossible. The tower controller screwed up and unfortunately the USAir crew never saw the Metro until it was too late.
