I got the CSEL course (written only). After not very long I decided that the Kings are intensely annoying. For the written, I much prefer Gleim.

I've never done any DVD courses for the oral/practical.

I hate the Kings DVD's, they suck man.. Every time i hear one of their "jokes" i feel like I get a lil dumber.. Go with Sportys or get the Gleim CD and Jeppessen books to go with it.

I agree. The Kings' humor is annoying. Sporty's just cuts to the chase, and gives you the simple facts that you need.

Gleim is also very good. I've used it the most.

You can knock King all you like, but recognise that Martha King is a hottie at least.

Seriously, I have the King DVDs and they are quite thorough even if their humour is diabolical as everyone else has stated. They do a bloody good job of explaining things in a very easy to understand way.

This said, I am trading them in for the Cessna Pilot Center "Cleared for Takeoff" CDs. It's easier for me to study these since my instructor and I are having difficulty contrasting my knowledge gained from the King DVDs with what's required in the Part 141 training syllabus. I had bought the King videos before starting training to get a head start and I am somewhat glad I did, even though I now have to sell them on eBay. Alledgedly, and I say this because I only got the CDs tonight, the videos allow you to follow a lesson structure, where after (and before) each lesson you can cover what was covered in that, or the last lesson prior exactly, with cockpit video showing maneuveurs and so on. It would have been great if in the videos they demonstrated things like slow flight, or descending turns to help reinforce the cockpit experience....perhaps there is a reason they don't..

Ironically the CPC CDs feature John and Martha King....they really have cornered this little multi-million dollar market quite well. My hat goes off to them both, but the rest of my clothes stay on.....until Martha comes on screen of course...

The ASA videos or ok, they can be a little condesending at times, but They are fairly good.

The King Videos make me suicidal after about 10 minutes. The ASA just put me to sleep. The Jepp books are good though, and Rod Machado has some good books as well. He is another one with the Humor though.

I got the ASA flight instructor test prep. Hated it. There's just a guy on a screen with fancy graphics reading a teleprompter of whats written in the book... and I mean word for word. Plus they don't go over everything you need and don't give any insights that can't be gleaned from the books. Having looked at Gleim, I recommend them. Their simple, to the point, and have everything you need.

Shortly after Gulf War I, a former Air Force nurse was one of many "contestants" in what might be called the first "reality" show, "Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire?" In the show, Rick Rockwell, the eligible bachelor, whittled down the field little by little, like his own beauty pageant, and eventually selected this nurse, Darva Conger.

While I don't have much of a taste for reality shows these days, it was a brand new concept at the time, and I confess I was roped into watching a few episodes. You must be asking by now, "How does this fit into a thread about King videos?" OK, here's the tie-in. During one round of selection, the bachelor was to consult with some of his friends to get their opinions about his choices. Lo and behold, Rick Rockwell's friends were none other than the Kings. I don't recall what advice they gave because I was too shocked that there they were on National TV.

Anyway... that's my story...

I used the King Videos (yes, videos, it was the pre-DVD era) for the FE written and for the ATP written. While I, too, found them to be somewhat annoying, they kept me awake through some pretty dry material, and I learned the material. I scored 100 on the FEX and 99 on the ATP.

The biggest help to me, though, was the practice tests on computer. I was able to take as many tests as my heart desired to get comfortable with it before paying for the real thing. I'm not great at memorizing answers, but I do well learning concepts. For me, the King videos worked well.

Ok, quick recap on the Kings.

Their VHS/DVDs SSUUUUUCCCCKKKKK!!!!!

Martha is HOTT!!!

and last but not least,

They're probably going to get their own reality TV show, maybe right after "Airline"

But seriously, they do break the material down to a very easy to understand level, and for the Cleared for Approach IFR material, they give you pretty good situational awareness! Other than that, there was alot I found to be left out as far as what is required for 61 or 141 standards, the Knowledge Test, and it kinda made me approach things in a somewhat "less than professional" manner.

I had to fill in alot of the areas from Gleim Test Prep. I highly recommend Sportys line-up. Much more professional, thorough, and still quite understandable!!!
