..that you don't know enough about flying, and one day you're going to make a fool of yourself? I swear, I've taken all the classes, watched the videos, stuck my head in the FAR/AIM for hours on end, and talked to pilots of every sort....For the past EIGHT YEARS. But with 250 hours under my belt, I still can't seem to recall VFR cloud clearances.

I know what you mean with the rest of it though, particularly the night before my initial CFI checkride. I stayed awake the whole night because I could not justify going to sleep since there were so many things to study, even though I'd been studying for two days straight. CFI checkride at FSDO the next morning with 15 minutes rest turned out okay. It seems like most people don't realize how much they know until they sit down and recite, teach, or explain it. Then after some hours it hits you...most of it did sink into your brain.

![]() I've never failed a checkride for a certificate, been a flight instructor under both part 61 and 141, passed 1 121 SIC checkride, 1 135 SIC checkride, and numerous 135 PIC checkrides all on the first try, but apparently I didn't know something as basic as lost communication procedures as well as I thought I did (and apparently the FAA inspectors/DE's/check airmen who may have asked that particular question didn't either). ![]() It's cliche, but you can never stop learning- especially in this business.

No one and I mean no one (including the FAA) knows everything about flying. You are better off having that feeling as it will keep you honest (read: ego-free) and have the determination to keep striving to learn.

Especially since most of my flying has been around Vegas, I DO NOT know enough about weather.

Do you guys think making the trip to Oshkosh this year would help? I'm certain the arrival procedures there would make a man out of anyone. (or a maybe a scared little boy crying for mommy.)

I've always had a nagging feeling in my head that I am weak on ground. I don't know why, because if you ask my peers, they'll say otherwise. But it's there, and I hate it.

I was sitting in a room the other day with some old Viet Nam pilots, who now fly fire and just listened to them talk back and forth. It is at that point in time I realized I am a an idiot compared to those guys. Doug was saying in another thread to sit back drink a beer and listen to the seasoned guys. I did just that and learned more about helos than any book could have ever taught me. The stories that these guys shared showed me what a truly skilled professional is like. So after sitting there for awhile they started sharing advice and some of their prspectives all I could say is wow.

I got that same feeling once after talking to a test pilot. He was telling me about his crashes. Yes, PLURAL, and no, NOT his fault.
