Notawannabe, I know that if you had the solution to non-unionized pilot labor, you'd be a rich man...however, that's not really what i'm asking (i must have stated myself incorrectly). what i'm asking is if/when you get up to where all the other airline pilots are currently how are you going to verifiably protect yourself without a union? I figured if you had a "plan" of sorts, then that would explain why you destest unions so much (as your tone seems to state).
I wouldn't say I detest them, and like I said, there is probably a place for them. As for my plan...I'm trying to stay out of the majors / regionals and do corporate....what I'd really like to do is own my own air service....small of course..maybe some island hopping. live in a grass hut and eat coconuts.

Oh hell, do you think I could have afforded two independent labor attorneys on my own?

Well, one I covered, but the other one was provided by my union.

I'm with you, man. However, I am intrigued by the monkeys throwing out $100 bills like confetti. If its IS true that Unions are holding us back from these amazing monkeys, we have an American crisis on our hands and I will take action.

Default Apples vs. Oranges

I think the whole airline job vs. job X out in the real world comparison is pretty much bunk. I doubt when you were in the oil industry were you "locked in" by a senority system. This is what I mean:

Say you've worked 10 years in the oil industry and you have built up some good experience and accomplished quite a few things. Along with that you're pay has increased as well. Say things turn south at your company and you start looking for work elsewhere; I'm sure that you are looking for pay and benefits in line with your experience and accomplishments right? Unfortunately in the airline industry it does not quite work that way.

If you were a CRJ Capt. for FlyI and making $80 an hour with years of experience in the aircraft, and you started at another regional, flying the same aircraft that you have so much experince with and accomplishments in guess what you get paid? $23/hr and sittin reserve.

So mgmt knows that they have you over the barrel because they know it is such a hard thing in this industry to lose that senority number. So you need that union, as a necessary evil, to counterbalance that and attempt to keep mgmt in check because this industry is very difficult to survive on your own.

I would love not to have to have a union, and I think ALPA is fat and really needs to get itself together. The only real solution would be to a systemwide regional senority list as well as one for the majors but thats a pipe dream as they say. It would be easier to get Whitney off the rock but it would solve alot of the problems I think.

You think you can escape management/labor issues doing that?

You'll spend your days sweating your butt off on the pedal-powered generator, The Skipper will be constantly yelling at you for every little mistake you make, The Professor will get to use all the best high-tech gear in the hut, and Mr. and Mrs. Howell will still make all the money.

And when the Cessna breaks down at that Island you dropped the couple off on. Skipper will scream, "Hey! That's not a maintenance station, you fly it back now, or yuffired!", you'll remember this thread and do the "I could have had a V-8" head slap.

Hey, speaking of which - I talked to the "ol lady today, and she actually forgot about it and so it's in the mail RIGHT NOW!!!

Sorry about that - I haven't been there to handle the homefront, so I had to leave it with her.

I'm sure there's new stuff out by now that I haven't even seen yet - I'll be caught up this weekend, though!

it could be argued that bankruptcy profitering is a necessity for increased market share. Here in ATL, airtran's lines are LONG..they must be doing well. What are they doing right ? prices ? new jets ? XM radio ?

Nope! Hey, I bought Max and his "lady friend" a meal at Hamburger Mary's. That's a "Get Out of Homophobe Jail FREE!" card if there was ever one!

See, that's what I love about the Doog...brotha's already bled red for his employer, but still doesn't hesitate to pick up the check. Now, when are we meetin' up up here in The SLC?

Back on subject for a moment...

The strike vote is an impressive sign of solidarity, but I very seriously doubt the pilots will be allowed to strike. Mark my words, if a strike comes about--which no doubt would drive DL into the history books--the Bush administration will order pilots back into the cockpit, a la the '97 AA strike. Unfortunately, the precedent's been set and the unions have been thusly de-fanged.

Yep! He did. I took it pretty well. And my ("lady friend") took it even better in the end.

Oh...FYI as I learned this weekend at gay pride PHX. Hamburger Mary's is now called "Burger Betty's." (lame) They swtich their franchise!
