Default Cessna G1000's

I was wondering if a private pilot has to have any special training before being able to rent/fly a G1000 equiped plane?

Per FAA no, but were you rent from will have there own policy. Most likely a ground seminar and a checkout flight.

We do a 5 hour checkout minimum as per insurance requirements.

Don't forget the ground school requirement on that one. Last I heard, the CPC kit was approved instead of the 6 hour marathon ground session we used to have....

It's all good, just go fly it... If anythinig bad happens just hit the red button in the center. If something really bad happens, go land by using the three old skool instruments under the fancy blue screens. Just kidding...

I read somewhere (maybe it was here?) that austraila's version of the FAA requires an endorsement for different types of GPS equipment in aircraft such as the G1000. I think that is a pretty good idea if the FAA were to require a different endorsement for each type of plane you fly sort of like the complex and high alt endorsements. Maybe take some of that old ADF/NDB stuff out of the writtens and include some GPS questions too?

By the time the FAA gets to it though, GPS technology may be outdated already?

Thats the FAA for you, alot of the regs in the FARS now are from the 40s and havent changed...like crew times.

Because, as we all know, the insurance industry makes the rules, not the FAA.
