Default Does race have anything to do with it...?

Well while chatting with my instructor he said that for the several interviews he attended, he (Asian), and the other minorities were the first person not make to the next step of the interview. My instructor to my knowledge is very qualified, he had interviews at scenic, American eagle, pinnacle, and other regional’s. He has his ATP and about 1700 hours TT, and some pic turbine as well but hasn’t landed a job after a lot of interviews, now he’s going to instruct for a flight school that has a contract with Japan airlines. But my question is, I am African American, and being so in the end will it be harder for me to get a regional job just because of it. I work for united and I have only seen a hand full of African American pilots, and only one Asian pilot in the 6 months I have been working here. Does anyone know some statistics of the diversity of airplane pilots etc…? Thanks a lot everyone

Attitude might have something to do with it. He could be frustrated from past experiences.

Since I’m Native American Indian and still have a grudge against the white man; I hope they can look past my little character flaw.

I’m a half-breed, so I don’t belong in either world : ). I’m from the Confederate Tribes of Siletz in Oregon, born and raised on the rez. My hero’s are Crazy Horse and Chief Joseph; we’ve been fighting terrorism since the 1600’s.

Does this mean the solution is Muslim casinos?

Well, to me, it is a serious question. I sincerely hope race is not issue at any level. I do not interview well after some interesting interview experiences for CFI position. These experiences range from which flight school I attended to comments about a fellow JCer. For example, the answer for VFR requirement equipments, my first answer was - altimeter. The owner(former sf340 captain) repsonded that is wrong answer. He complained about the flight school where I got my training from. Of course, I did not get the job. After that interview, I always feel a lot of pressures to prove myself - fly or teach. Therefore, I sincerely hope race is not an issue.

I'd say it, but I only think like three people would get the joke.

I gotta call you sometime and catch up Lloyd. Aren't you an astronaut with how many hours you have now?

I just wanted to see if anyone had any real info for me. I guess not and it’s not like I am keeping track of how many minority pilots I see, its just as I see a lot more than others. I wasn’t raised in a racist kind of fashion, I was taught to treat everyone like I would want to be treated, and I have made a lot of diverse friends because of it. I get a lot slack at work because I don’t really look African American, they either say I look Indian, Fijian, and other things. I guess I hope its not a big deal. Thanks anyway.

This is one of those things where it's impossible to tell. If someone was a racist, he could reject someone based on his prejudices without having to disclose them.

"I just can't see myself working with this guy. He just creeped me out."

Now, the reason said racist can't see himself working with that guy is because of the color of his skin, and he's creeped out because he doesn't want to share a cockpit with him.

But you'd never be able to tell.

Sucks, but that's reality.

I have been watching and mentoring a young man who grew up with my son. He has progressed quickly. But he is a very impressive guy who gives an excellent first impression. He also worked in customer service for a while and really handles himself well.

He joined this organization and has very positive things to say about it. I've known some of the early pioneers who started this organization and they are stellar men.

So check it out.
