Default VDP's

just want to clarify about VDP's

can you descend prior to the VDP if you have the runway insight?

the comm/inst Jepp book says you shouldn't

I dont think you are suppose to descend until reaching VDP because of potential hazards. If you can see the runway then are visual and the VDP doesnt really come into effect.

thanks for replying

i was just reading and just thought i'd ask,

haven't done many approaches with VDP's

Why would you want to? well, I probably wouldn't, seeing as I'd already be down low at the MDA...

No. The AIM 5-4-5 clearly states pilots should not descend below the MDA until at the VDP and all necessary visual references per FAR 91.175 are met.

Well, you wouldn't but that's not really why. What if you have an abnormally high MDA?

After you cross the VDP, if you don't have the runway in sight, you might as well plan on going missed. Once you've passed it, landing in the touchdown zone using "normal maneuvers" becomes less likely, although that somewhat depends on aircraft type and whether you're 91 or 121/135.

A time when you might want to ignore the VDP is if you are in a light airplane and have a very, very long runway. Since you are part 91 and don't have to land in the touchdown zone, you can keep going to the MAP at the MDA and maybe you'll get the runway in sight when you're almost of the end of it.

If it's 12,000 feet long then you'd easily be able to get down from an MDA that's 400 to 600 AGL.

you are absolutely right. if youre that close to the runway but don't see it, no point in really continuing. Reading more in depth in the AIM, it states that to descend below MDA at the VDP one must have the visual reference required by 91.175(c)(3).

I agree on the comment about what type of aircraft. If you're doing 70-90kts in a 172 there's a good chance you could make it down on a longer runway, but if you're doing 150kts there's no way you could make it.

Do you mean in the sim, or in reality?

If you are flying something fast you might actually start the action of beginning a descent at the Precision Descent Point in order for the aircraft to physically be descending at the Visual Descent Point.

I believe Part 121 says you can descend below a VDP if delayed descent will make it impossible to land in the touchdown zone.
