Default Sad, Bizarre Crash

I still don't know anyone personally who has died from aviation, thank God, but today it got too close. I got a call from a girl I went to High School with today who said her uncle died in a plane crash in OK. She called me cause I'm a pilot and I talked to her about it. I found some interesting info about him actually being an airline pilot, so I looked it up and on FlightInfo it says he was a 767 captain for AAL. He was 59 and two months away from retiring...
Here is the links for both:
http://forums.flightinfo.com/showthread.php?t=74407
http://www.kotv.com/main/home/storie...ge=1&id=100073

Everyone, please be careful. And I know it is still early and never to speculate BUT, as a young pilot with 100 hours, what can I learn when a 767 captain with 10923418736418736 hours of experience flies into the ground?

It just goes to show that things happen and sometimes the experience one has will have little effect. The faa report doesn't say anything so one cannot even speculate as to what happened (and that's a good thing). All you can do is wait for the details to come out and try and possibly learn something from it.

In no way am I referring to this specific accident, but it's been said before, "Pilots are not inventing new ways of killing themseleves". If you browse through the NTSB database, you will see the same mistakes happening again and again.

Serves as a good reminder than no matter what your age or what your flight time accidents happen. I had a friend a few years ago with thousands of hours as a cropduster die in a crash on the way back to the airport, last i heard everyone thought he had a heart attack or stroke and went down. The best way to avoid accident is to be smart, make sure the plane is safe and solid, avoid weather and conditions your not comfortable with, and even if you hold a first class medical you got yesterday, if you dont feel healthy enough to fly, dont. And even if you take all the precautions , although rare, accidents can happen. Just remember to keep your head in the game and stick to your training.

Stuff happens, no matter how experienced you are you got be on top of everything when in that cockpit, No matter if it is a 777 or a C-172.
You make sure you have planned your flight correectly and bla bla bla and NEVER EVER let ego get to you, this is not something you mess with, people depend on you in the back of that peace of metal to get to their destination safely.
Even in a GA aircraft you make sure you get there in one peace.

Gotta love the media. I wonder if they showed this on the tv news? A veteran airline pilot dies in a tragic accident two months before retirement. They report this story, show this picture, and then move on to peanut oil in McD's french fries. I just don't care for this kind of visual exploitation.
May he rest in peace and his family cope.
