Caneman, You mentioned that you saw flying as a job, not a hobby. Was this always the case. Is this the view of most propilots? Because I've dreamed about being a pilot as long as I can remember. I'm going to get my license and then see what happens. But did you ever view any of your flying jobs with a passion? p.s gook luck with your new area of profession. Cheers Tristan |

Caneman thanks for your reply. From my perspective $60,000 per annum for flying jets around the world would be a dream come true. Can you believe I actually pay quite a bit of money for cockpit DVDs, Polar Air Cargo, Virgin Atlantic..I've gottem all. I think I've watched my Polar dvd like 100 times now..I would just love to fly cargo ops into destinations like Tokyo, Hong Kong, but I wont rave on telling you my problems But I can understand you not wanting to fly for less then half your previous salary and double the hours. I think I tend to romanticize things I'm passionate about. I'm still going to give my whole pilot thing a shot, if doesn't work out I will be happy that I tried.Cheers Tristan |

Tristan. With all due respect. When you get to the point where you ARE the guy on the DVD instead of the guy watching the DVD, you deserve to be well compensated. 60K a year isn't really all that great for someone who's worked their way into a job as a PIC on a heavy.

Here here DE727, My father flew from the age of 16 to around 62 years of age. He flew when jets first came online, took crappy routes to get the experience in jets so he would be able to be based back at LAX. He paid his dues in civil and military aviation and was compensated at a rate equal to his level of experience and ratings. I don't know for sure, but I am fairly certain that at the height of his career he made close to 250k/yr. The only vice he had, if you can call it that, was aviation. Spent much of his money on his personal aircraft, hangars and tiedowns. None of that would have been possible on 60k/yr. If he had been told that he would be making that amount he probably would have stayed in the military full time or gone corporate. 60K for a senior capt, heavy, with a lot of time is NOT adequate pay. Thanks for the insight Caneman and DE727. |

UPS- Yeah I guess because I'm 24 and been living as a poor arse student for...well as long as I can remember, US60k (converted into aussie dollar) sounds pretty good. But I totally agree that $60 is peanuts for a PIC of a heavy. If Qantas pilots were given that salary tomorrow, I'm sure a massive strike would follow. I just graduated from uni finishing up with masters, studying at uni for 6 years all up. I think different things motivate people, and to be honest making a 6 figure salary isn't my number one ambition. Given the above factors combined with my passion for flying, you can see where I'm coming from. But who knows, I may think differently in the future. Btw does UPS fly to Australia? Tristan |

How do you know thats really caneman. It could be some imposter posing as the Cane. Yes he states about EWA and UPS . Anyone can look that up on the internet. And the hours that he has way exceeds minumums from other carriers. If it is really the real Cane then God Bless You. Good luck.

Sorry if some of this was addressed earlier, only read the first page. A lot of guys wear gloves because of sweaty hands, the yoke on the DC8 is fairly smooth and easy to loose a grip on. The sink rate thing, it happens, especially if you are heavy and have any kind of a tailwind, a 1000 fpm decent within 500 AGL will set it off, that only requires a 165 knot groundspeed on a 3 degree slope, it happens, it was corrected for immediately, no biggie. Flaring with both hands, the elevator on the DC8 is not hydraulic in any way, pure man power (tim allen grunt here) so if to go from 1 or 2 degrees nose down on the approach to 7 to 8 degrees nose up, the thing can be heavy, and you want to be careful about overtrimming aft. It's a balancing act.
