Default Type Rating

What are the requirements for keeping a type rating current?

Default Currency is the ability to carry people eh?

Hiya Meritflyer

Lets take a look at § 61.57 Recent flight experience: Pilot in Command

I believe that the currency requirements for a type rating are the same
requirements that are necessary for a typical category and class rating with
some added Exceptions to take into consideration.

Meaning that, in order to be current with the type that is on your certificate,
you need to do your 3 take-offs and landings (3 landings to a full stop if
you're flying a tail-wheel aircraft
) sometime within the preceding 90 day
period in the same category and class or type that you have on your
certificate.

You can do the take-offs and landings at night in order to count towards
being current in the day. Remember though, the ability to log night currency
starts 1 hour after sunset and ends 1 hour before sunrise. Also, you have to
be the one physically controlling the aircraft.

Another option aside from physically being in the plane and flying, can be to
use a simulator or a flight training device if it's approved by the FAA for
landings and used in an approved part 142 training program. The night
currency requirement can be accomplished in the simulator by having the
simulator set for nighttime settings as well.

However, if you are:
  • Flying under part 121
  • Flying under part 135
  • Flying an aircraft type that requires more than 1 crew member

Those exceptions start comming into play.

These exceptions can be found under § 61.57 (e) and
extend or refer to other sections that must be accomplished in accordance
with part 121, 125, and 135

I hope that's a start to answering your question.

(If there is anything I missed, anyone feel free to give me a hand)

Look a little further to FAR 61.58 as well. A checkride ( 61.58 check ) is required if you are not flying 121, 125, 133, 135, or 137 ops. It might be once per year if you are just flying the one type, or it could be once every other year if you are flying two or more types.
