I hate these words. Can the FAA do anything to stop this if they think it may be a safety issue? I personally would never fly on an airline like MESA etc that has 250TT pilots up front because I know at 250 I knew squat, and to subject myself and my family to that low level of skill would never happen. WHat if the captain gets ill or injured, I think the experience of the first officer is not enough to get that plane down if it is damaged, bad Wx etc. THere is not enough experience to handle an abnormal situation. I dont care how many sim checks there was, experience makes a good pilot! |

Im assuming your not an airline or regional pilot, otherwise disregard my situation. When I was a customer service agent at Skywest I would sometimes have to re-route pax on other airlines due to wx, mx, or other problems. Say your familys flight was cancelled and the only way to get to your final destination was on a different airline than planned, a MESA carrier in this case. Would you tell the agent no I wont fly on MESA, I want a refund, see ya later? I hope my situation doesnt make me sound like an ass but I think the whole 250TT pilot at MESA is a rare or infrequent occurance (again Im assuming, correct me if im wrong). I dont believe a majority of MESA pilots are comming in at 250TT. Granted they probably do have a lot of pilots with low time but I think of the 250TT pilot as something I remember in my stats class. Take a group of pilots and obtain their TT at date of hire, its most likely you are going to have outliers in that group. The outliers being TT of 250, 300 or even 2000 hours. The rest of the group located somewhere in the middle. However I do agree with the statement that in certain professions, being a pilot in this case, experience is very important than total time. That being said and I dont know if this is a fair comparison but dont doctors start with a very limited knowledge of their certain specialty? For example, a new surgeon doing a procedure for the very first time being supervised by a highly experienced surgeon. Is this kind of a similar situation with a low time pilot? In both phases of training the doctor or pilot both have the book or academic knowledge, but then comes a time where each person, the doctor or pilot, must conduct a flight or surgical procedure for the very first time. Again I realize I am only a private pilot and dont have close to the amount of knowledge a professional pilot has. However I am still learning about and training to become apart of this industry. As an aside, I often read some of the posts in the Pro Pilot forum and am amazed at the amount of knowledge you guys and girls know about flying and can only wait to be able to have that amount of knowledge on such subject matter. However since working at Sky West for a year I have somewhat of an inside look on this industry and the problems and concerns facing it. Anyway please correct me on any information I have stated, and again I hope I dont sound like a jerk with my hypothetical situation. "I'm an expert Microsoft Flight Simulator pilot," exclaimed a passenger.

Honestly, I think PFT/PFJ should be ILLEGAL from a safety standpoint. As far as business decisions for profitability, it can be a GREAT idea. |
