what's rnak? I don't think anyone here has rnak tapes do they?

btw, our site deals with real airline careers, not virtual... you might get better information by going to a flight sim community where they deal more with virtual reality (that is, not real life reality).

"Virtual reality", like "deafening silence", is a prime example of an oxymoron.

1: Proofread, PLEASE
2: There's not many virtual airline people here
3: I can't answer your question because I have no idea what you're talking about

Captain, first officer. That's about it.

I disagree. Virtual reality is a simulation of reality. The operative word is virtual, not reality.

deafening silence is an oxymoron. Jumbo shrimp is not.

On a thread-related note, someone should start a virtual airline, then when it turns a profit, start furloughing employees and cut virtual pay. Realism is the ultimate goal, isn't it?

Good idea. There are some really popular virtual airlines out there with thousands of "pilots" and some pilots. They have their own software and have really good websites, create aircraft manuals and many other documents, yet they fail to do what the real airlines do. Really good idea to cut people from the roster.

Now, now. Invalid excuses not allowed.
Crap keyboard does not prevent proof-reading. That's why there is a "Preview Post" button right next to the "Submit Reply" button, and there is also an option to go back and edit your post after submission (limited time only).

Anyway, Doug gave your answer earlier. Lowest pilot position is First Officer. Next step up the ladder is Captain. That's all there is.

What do you mean by "rank tape"?

Oh, and welcome to JetCareers!

Ranks like the military?

Airlines don't really have a 'rank' system. The CA is the final authority on the airplane, so I guess s/he would 'outrank' the other crewmembers on that particular flight. The flight attendants are labeled for the positions that they're working, but there's no one F/A that has the authority to boss the other ones around.

Do you mean the management structure? The pilots are supervised by their Chief Pilot, s/he reports to the Director of Flight Ops, who reports to the Vice-President of Operations, who reports to the CEO. (Just a generic line there, not necessarily indicitive of the specific job titles involved at each management step at EVERY airline.)

Guess I'm a little confused on exactly what a 'rank structure' is that you're looking for.

4 stripes = captain
3 stripes = first officer / second officer
2 stripes = Gulfstream Academy cadet picking up on waitresses at Hooters.

Every carrier has a 'lead', '#1', OBL, or similar position. Basically they're just the ones who have to do the liquor deposit, paperwork, etc. Despite what some of them may think, they don't have any real power . They may be able to make a decision to, say comp liquor, for example, but they don't have any 'rank' to boss the other F/As around or give orders.

Gosh, I hated #1s with attitudes. Everyone would just roll their eyes at them, and do as they pleased anyway.

The OBL program was kind of a joke. The only OBL is the captain and some companies didn't have the cajones to say "Uhh, the final authority is el capitan".

Outside the US many long haul carriers have Second Officers .... 2 stripes. I guess that means you only need 1 stripe to chase waitresses in Hooters internationally !!!
