Glad to see that the news about an airline shutting down and the subsequent jobs lost by pilots, et al has been degraded to jokes about this board's resident gay pilot and tired cliches about lesbians.

Classy . . .

If anyone cares--and based on this thread, I doubt that they do--there's probably a bunch of FLYi guys trying to get home this week. Here's a thread from the much hated flightinfo about how we might help them:

http://forums.flightinfo.com/showthread.php?t=69645

Good luck FLYi pilots!

They can still jumpseat domestically and internationally for the time being. After all, they're on most, if not all ALPA-approved jumpseat lists so there shouldn't be a problem getting home at all. Especially if they're on the CASS system. FlyI has access to the ALPA forum with actual information about how to make it home so it's already being taken care of, sans lecture.

Uncalled for comment, many of us are airline people and feel the pain of the Independence Air employees, and, as you are reading the thread, not "1" joke was directed or made at the expense of an employee Independence Air.

Would like us to mourn, light a candle? And as to the link you provided, would you like us to offer up the jumpseat? I have jumpseats in our simulators, I can offer that up....

Unhappy

Just sad, I wish the pilots and the other employees of the airline, the best of luck. I am not a professional pilot yet but I can't imagine the pain of not having a job suddenly after flying for an airline.

It wasn't a lecture. I was just surprised that a thread could start out about the demise of so many people's careers and end up about jokes regarding other people's sexuality.

I wasn't sure if everyone was aware that they were still allowed access to cabin seats, as they are not in CASS. We all know that commuting can be tough enough without the complication of a dissolution of a company.

I stand my assertion that the tone of the thread was insensitive and cavalier. If it was Delta or ExpressJet, the tone would have been different.

We're as susceptible to 'thread creep' like every other forum on the internet. You can literally start a thread about landing gear and within six posts end up talking about Germans launching zeppelins from Koln to bomb Leige. It's the nature of the internet.

I doubt it.

Look, the entire business model for FlyI was flawed. Sure, people pick on the legacy carriers, but at least they've shown they can make money in the past.

FlyI's business model was doomed from the start. And while I feel badly for the employees -- you know, living in the DC area and flying, don't you think I know some of them? -- it was inevitable.

"I was just surprised that a thread could start out about the demise of so many people's careers and end up about jokes regarding other people's sexuality"

You haven't been around here long. Happens all the time...

"If it was Delta or ExpressJet, the tone would have been different"

May be....I was gonna say you were full of crap, but you might be right. This site has more wannabe's than airline pilots which makes it different from some of the others. Because of that, it's more of a social place where threads go off in all kinds of strange directions.

In any case, sorry you were offended. If you really want to make your point you are free to start a thread of your own. When threads take a turn, like this one did, people who aren't interested in following the new theme tend to stop paying attention. Your interest in helping the Independence Air pilot group is honorable and would get more attention with a new thread.

The tone of the thread was not an indictment on FLYi's business plan. That would have actually related to the topic. Instead, the tone of the thread was a jovial opportunity to have some sophomoric fun. I still don't think it's appropriate to mix those kinds of jokes with other's misfortune. I guess I'm the nearsighted prude. It's an opinion that I stand behind.

Not that I'm condoning thread creep, but did you happen to see the "ExpressJet" thread? A overwhelming percentage of my most frequent users are ExpressJet pilots and it had to be moved to the lavatory because it went south.

Okay, replace my use of "surprised" with "disappointed."

Are there really that many Doug Taylors? You change your avatar more often than the Department of Homeland Security 10 Most Wanted List.

Because I said 'Gunga la gunga' in another thread in reference to "Caddyshack", the DHLS might misinterpret that as coded speech and start wiretapping my mobile phone without a warrant.
