Default Sharp debate over sharp objects on US planes

Sharp debate over sharp objects on US planes

Tue Dec 20, 3:46 PM ET

Quote:
A Democrat lawmaker joined flight attendants to claim new rules allowing sharp objects back onto America's airliners made a September 11-style hijacking spree more likely.

But President George W. Bush's security czar Michael Chertoff hit back that bombs and not blades were now the biggest terror threat to US aviation.

The debate sharpened two days before the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) relaxes rules on sharp objects on planes to allow passengers to carry items like nail scissors and small screwdrivers.

Markey's call was supported by New York Democrat Joseph Crowley, Carie Lemack, who lost her mother in the 9/11 attacks and The Association of Flight Attendants.

Personally, im one that believes if someone is going to even attempt to do something on a plane regarding the use of small weapons - the entire plane will on that person(s) within seconds. It's still categorized as small blades, not like 12 inch blades are being allowed.

Maybe, maybe not. I'd like to think they would, but I'm not all that convinced 100% of the time.

I'm profoundly neutral on this one. I don't think the terrorist will try to pull off another September 11. That was a one time deal, and remember, even the guys on UAL 93 said screw this, we're gonna fight back.

Now, I think you'll end up with a Richard Reid type situation, where someone ends up getting his ass thoroughly smoked.

But, I could see a mentally disturbed person trying to do some harm with scissors.

However, if we could get rid of this TSA nonsense and this helps do it, I'm fine with that. The fools who did the THIRD screening so I could fly to DCA from YYZ wanted to open up a wrapped lipstick which is a present until I got pissed and said, it's been through x-ray machines TWICE and here's the receipt, don't be an idiot.

The cop watching them said to me, hey, take it easy, man, and I said, well, officer, you tell me. It's lipstick. Here's the receipt. Is it really necessary to open it up?

No, it's not, sir.

Effing morons. If they all got their heads cut off, I don't know if we could tell the difference.

Default My take

I think they should allow weapons on board. I saw statistics somewhere that showed stores that don't allow concealed weapons are robbed significatnly more than those that allow them. Hell I would encourage people to bring guns on my airline if I could( and if I owned an airline). You wouldn't have to worry about someone trying to hijack the airplane. They would be dead pretty quick.

OK maybe not the brightest idea in the world but I have been up working all night and it sounds good to me.
