Default Saw Something Strange.

I was out at GRR this weekend, and something was strangely different that caught my eye. Sitting on th ramp was a 727 with Pan Am livery. Are they making a comeback? I checked the website and found that they do indeed run some flights, but GRR was not on the list of cities. I thought Pan Am was gone. Anyone know anything about the current status of the once giant airline?

Pan Am 1 is gone, Pan Am 2 is gone, I think Pan Am 3 went too, but might do charters.

Don't make the mistake of thinking Pan Am 'The Former Global Airline' has anything to do with the organization that bought the name! Like Braniff being the production company for SouthPark.

If anyone here remembers Braniff, that is.

They have had several 'comebacks' over the last few years. Each time an entirely different company I believe. Last I knew they were not a part of Boston-Maine Airways. http://www.flypanam.com/index.phtml

Try that.

Fooled me. I mean the paint scheme was just how I remember it from back in the day. Talk about false advertising.

Not really! They own the name, and they bought it for that warm/fuzzy association with the former days of yore.

There was a PanAM 727 livery at CAK last Spring. It was a personal aircraft when you did a check on the N number, but man was the paint job good.

I didn't know Braniff until their final days...with there blue, white and maroon livery. Best one in my opinion. The others were gawky.

WestAir. I've always liked the name of that airline. Even the callsign was cool: "Sundance".

Mid Pacific, SeaFlite, Northwest ORIENT, not sure of any of their callsigns.

CHA: Northwest Orient is still around, but they just dropped the "Orient"!

Kristie: Something we ought to look into but I'm sure whomever owns it wants a zillion dollars for it!

To clear this all up people, its not really "Pan Am"....The airline is Boston-Maine Airways/Airlines.....They originally operated under the Pan Am title (they were Pan Am 3, as Doug called it), and had agreements with a South Florida company flying Grumman sea planes as well as their BAe-31s and 727s. They are still around, barely, but I catch one every now and then at FLL. Look at some of the pictures Ive posted in the past, a Pan Am / Boston-Maine bird is in a couple.

Man, I thought Eastern was the only airline out there when I was a little guy. They used to fly right over my backyard on final when I lived in Chicago. My first memory of a jet was on of those silver bullet 727's going overhead. Sure other airlines were there also, but I only seemed to see the ones from Eastern.

Talking

I saw Elvis. I mean the Pan Am jet at SLC on the east ramp one day. I was down by the National Guard ramp preflighting. I thought it might be part of the flight school but never researched it further. I did take a pretty good look as it was parked right where I make my turn out to go to Redwood Rd. Getting around that thing and staying east of Kilo sucked.

While I knew that NWA was always legally NWA, it was the service when they were calling themselves NW Orient that was lost in the KLN purchase in 89-90. I heard of some almost unbelievable stories of service on the HNL-TOY (think it was NRT, but not sure) service

Like most airlines, the late 80's early 90's began the downward turn in service (IMO).
