I might not be here on Friday, but where are you flying in on Thursday? If you are flying into the bay area we might be able to meet up Thursday night.

As a matter of fact, I'm flying into Oakland, so maybe we can hook up. I arive in the afternoon. I purchased the ASA software for the ATP exam, so I'm doing some studying to prepare.

Well, as it turns out, I'll be in Atwater after all next weekend, so maybe we can hook up on Friday. You'll be busy pretty much all day but we can at least say hello. We always go bowling on Thursday night. You are wecome to join us if you were planning on getting out that early.

Nice! I'd love to join you guys in Thursday night!

Are the instructors generally off on weekends, and are they allowed if need be two weeks off (provided of course that the students aren't suffering as a result)?

Yes, you do get weekends off unless you are volunteered to be the weekend babysitter. They need one instructor to stay behind each weekend since the chinese don't know common stuff such as to call 911 for an emergency, and what not. No, you can not take two weeks off because the students need to fly at least 25hrs per month and you have 4 students. There is no extra time in the day for another instructor to cover your students.

Well, it really depends on the reason for your time off request. If your wife had a baby, or there was a death in the family or something equally as serious, you might be able to get two weeks. Usually ony 2 or 3 days are approved though because of the complications subpilot mentioned. There are team leaders who usually only have 2-3 students who could divide your students among them and cover you for a short time, but it would require extreem circumstances to be approved for 2 weeks.

I'm flying into Sacramento on Tuesday and driving down to Atwater for the interview, and leaving from Sacramento on Friday. Anybody else going to be there for that timeframe? Anyone know if those two days are gonna be full or did I just book one day too many? Heh...

Oh, and any other tips on what to study besides the ATP written?

Funny flyguy.

I have answered about 4 private messages already and have posted what type of questions to study on this thread. I feel like my eternal job on this forum is now to answer this question each and ever day. Just show up and take the test people. The test is long but not hard.

Sorry subpilot. I have indeed read your posts and I appreciate your help; I'm just trying to cover all the bases, to see if there was anything else that could trip me up in the test or interview or whatever. The flight from Indiana is a long one, and it'll be an even longer one home if I screw something up.

But as long as there's nothing that jumps out at you (which is what I gather) then I figure a current CFI/CFII shouldn't have a problem, and that's all I'm looking for.

Thanks,
FF

...not as long as a flight from NYC.

I believe we'll do fine. As long as you prepare and relax, you'll do fine.

Anybody interview this past week/weekend? I might be going out soon; there's been a little complication in my transportation plan.

Yep, I interviewed this past week, got offered the job, and will be starting in a week and a half.

Pretty much everything said above is 100% spot on... long written but not too tough, relaxed interview. Dorms are dorms, but free. Instructors seem like a great group. I'm looking forward to it... lots of flying, good place to save up some money.

Primary training is now in 152s, instrument training in the Alarus, and multi training will be in Seminoles. They also have 2 simulators, with another on the way, and a king air full motion sim on the horizon.

Good luck on the interview, maybe I'll see ya in a couple weeks!

Congratulations! Since pay is by the hour, do you get paid anything when you first get there? I'm wondering if there is any large delay in between arriving and starting to fly.

Well, from what I gather, you'll be instructing pretty much from when the students get there. My group, from Shanghai Airlines, is scheduled to show up on the 14th, and will start flying as soon as they get TSA approval, which ought to be done before they arrive. Some of the previous groups had a bit of a delay, so the instructors would just do ground school (pay is the same, $18/hr, for ground school) until the approval came in.

Like I said, it seems like a good deal, so if it's something that would appeal to you, don't take my word from it, but come in, interview, and see for yourself. They need instructors like crazy.

One other thing... it's done part 61, which means the students all need their 50 x-c PIC time for their instrument, and we ride along for all of it. So for those guys without a lot of cross country, you'll have at least 200 hours of real, 50NM cross country time just from the instrument. And that's not even counting the private and commercial multi cross countries. Just FYI.

Good luck!

At this school they have a lot of pressure to get these students done in the 10 months and pressure, just like s**t, rolls downhill. We (the family) are going to visit Atwater tomorrow and check out the community and places to stay and then make up our mind by Monday. This school looks like a great place to work for a single guy but for a married guy with kids it looks like it may be a little to demanding and unflexible. If they contacted me one month ago before I got hired by Mazzei then I would have taken this job with no second thoughts but man...Mazzei is a very good school to work for. I would hate to make the mistake of leaving a good deal for greener grass because the grass aways seems to be greener on the other side, but what if I am already on the greener side.

Hey Subpilot, did you end up staying at MAzzie?

Thumbs up

Well, I've been welcomed into the fraternity! I just got the call today, and although I told them that I'd need about 2 weeks to move (after all, I'm coming from NYC!!), they mentioned to me that it wouldn't be a problem, but if I can come sooner, it would be great. I'm going to work on that.

It's good to get the job, though. I'm happy.

Thanks, man! You fly out of Arlington? Which company? I remember a cross country to there in the Seminole (ATP). Nice airport, and I love those tall antennas just a few miles away.

Congrats to everyone!! About the TSA approval, it will probably be at least 2 weeks from the time the students arrive to the time they will be able to fly, but you will have ground lessons to do with them in the mean time. You won't be teaching ground school (unless you want to), but will be doing individual ground lessons for which you get paid the same amount as flight instruction.
