Wow, what a day. The test was 100 questions. The first 50 were essay and covered fundamentals of instruction, VFR, IFR, system knowledge, FAR's, airport markings and signs, weather, weight and balance, aerodynamics. Every answer had to be explained as if you were teaching to a novice student. The next 50 questions were multiple choice and in one word...easy. The test took 5 hours to finish!!!

After the test I toured the facilities and flightline. Very nice in my opinion and they are growing very fast. They will have a Level D King Air flight simulator in May and a King Air on the flightline later this year. The Twin Stars are not there yet but they are using Duetches(sp) right now. The dining facility was not the cleanest. They could use a full time janitor to pick up after the students. Every meal is chinese food, except weekend brunch includes french toast and hamburgers??? Why on the weekend when the instructors leave town??? The next group of students arrive next Thursday and all four applicants got offered a job. They guarantee 100 hours per month, add pre/post and ground equates to about 120-140 hours of pay per month. Should be a challenging and rewarding experience.

yikes, well congrats!
Too bad I couldn't make the interview, keep us updated on how things are working there.

Doesn't sound like the test was ATP questions at all.

They told me they are looking for more applicants still. I talked about the pros and cons of this job with my wife and I may end up not taking this job. My current job just gave me a raise, I can still get 100hrs a month where I am at, and I control my own schedule. At this school they have a lot of pressure to get these students done in the 10 months and pressure, just like s**t, rolls downhill. We (the family) are going to visit Atwater tomorrow and check out the community and places to stay and then make up our mind by Monday. This school looks like a great place to work for a single guy but for a married guy with kids it looks like it may be a little to demanding and unflexible. If they contacted me one month ago before I got hired by Mazzei then I would have taken this job with no second thoughts but man...Mazzei is a very good school to work for. I would hate to make the mistake of leaving a good deal for greener grass because the grass aways seems to be greener on the other side, but what if I am already on the greener side.

What I would have to do is leave everything here, my house, GF, dogs, and drive out there to live for 10 months. I'm not completely sure I want to do that, combined with the timing of the interviews...

What are the multi-engine prospects like? Do the students do the ME-COMM as an initial or add-on? Also, does each student spend the entinre 10 months getting their ratings or is it more like the ATP 3 month/student schedule?

Well, I emailed my resume. Seems like a good proposition, and I have all my ratings. Plus I get to try out the TwinStar when it comes online. Why not?

In the 10 months you'll have 4 commercial-multi studnets who'd be about 30-40 hours each. They don't even do a commercial single engine, only private, instrument, and commercial-multi, and also some training in a King Air, but we won't be doing the instructing in the King Air unless we want to stick around until we have over 1500 hours (insurance). I'm not familiar with ATPs program, but our program is 0 time to commercial-multi in 10 months (again no commercial-single) which means about 1 rating every 3 months.

Flyguy,
Are you still looking for ground instructors? If so, what are the requirments and how long will the school give you to get your instructor ratings?

Ha Ha, I think our team leaders will be doing that. We want to get our King Air instructors from in house. We're selfish like that.

Default Instructors still needed

We still need more instructors to start in February. We are only accepting applicants with CFI and CFII completed, MEI is a plus. If you are still interrested and have not sent me a resume, or sent one a while ago and haven't heard back, send me your most current resume and i'll forward it to the assistant chief. Qualified applicants should expect to be contacted in the next week or so. We'll be doing interviews over the next two weeks, whenever you can get here. Let me know if you are interrested.

What's wrong with that? Should they take your word that you know your stuff?

Yes. And actually it used to be twice as hard but we had to lower the standard a bit to get enough instructors for this program. We have very high standards for quality instruction, and since you have not flown with us since private, we have no idea what you know, so we have to make you prove it. Instructors who trainined at Sierra have to take the entrance exam also. The good news is, we really need instructors, so unless you do extreemely poorly, you will be given consideration. I suppose you can think of it as a right of passage.

You best bet is to study ATP Gleim, turbo-prop systems (particulary King Air - I hear they like to ask a lot about them) and CFI oral exam guides.

That is silly. I just went through the interview with Sierra and there was not a single question above a CFI level of knowledge. Yes, Sierra will have a King Air soon but the new hire CFI's are not going to be teaching it. I am not trying to compromise the integrety of the written exam/oral interview but lets not tell people to study ATP/King Air systems because that is not the type of questions your school is testing canidates on.

BTW, thanks you for walking my resume in and giving me the opportunity to interview.

Well you would know better than I would, but another candidate told me he was asked about King Air systems. Although now that you mention it I think he was applying for the team leader position and eventually will be instructing in the King Air.

What I suggested was just my best guess as what they were testing over. The old test was 100 essay questions and took 8 hours, and did cover ATP level material. As for this test, there are 50 questions from the ATP written, so I can't immagine it would be a bad idea to study them. But then again, you've taken the test and I haven't so I'll let you give the gouge.

And you are quite welcome. Have you decided if you'll take the job?

Flyguy,
Thanks for the info. Does Sierra offer any sort of sign-up/relocation bonus? I wish I could do this, but I don't have the $$ to relocate to the other side of the country (I live in MA).

Unfortunately we do not have the means to fly anyone out for an interview or to pay any re-location costs. This opportunity is only available to those in California or who are willing and able to reloate on their own. We wish we could offer transportation and/or relocation, but we are just a flight school, not a large multi-national corporation.
