Default Overly Geeky Pilots

MikeD did a post a while ago on overly conservative pilots. Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you an installment of overly geeky pilots.

About a dozen people in my flying club have been going back and forth all day on email about what the best speed would be in order to minmize costs, since we charge on tach time. They're crunching numbers on what the most efficient combination of MP and RPM is so that you burn the least fuel and spend the least amount of money on rental fees.

After about 30 messages going back and forth, I threw in one. It's so true.

Guys, my head is starting to hurt from all the computations you're throwing around, and I didn't have to crunch the numbers!

Tony, I hear that...if those guys that tight on funds flying that they have to calculate the specific rpm to the tenth..then maybe they shouldnt be flying haha

Have they brought up a high approach and shut the engine down on final to save fuel?

Hey, where is the sarcasm tag?????

If it is a multi-engine aircraft, decide which engine tach is used to compute costs. Shut that engine down during cruise, and fly single engine the remainder of the flight.

Disclaimer: The FAA might not find this suggestion to be in compliance with its "reckless operation" regulations. Therefore, do not implement.

C'mon Tony, we're doing stuff somewhat similar to that in my 11th grade pre-calculus class

As an instructor, I could very easily argue that we never get to practice simulated flights on one engine! I mean, once the engine has failed, you've got to find an airport with conditions good enough to land!!
