| Old Skool | State Ports Authority Chairman Harry Butler was flying the plane from Georgetown to Columbia on Thursday morning when he lost both radios. The weather wasn't good enough to land in Columbia without the radio, so he turned back to the coast, where it was clear. En route, his co-pilot sent a message on a signal device. He was supposed to type 7600, which means "lost communications." But instead, he punched in 7500, which reports a hijacking, Butler said. http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0905/262923.html |

| My first instructor told me a story about a cop who was getting his private, and he was unfamilliar with the operation of the mode C transponder (shame on his instructor!). When he was on his long solo cross country, he ws cruising at 7500 ft, and ATC told him to squawk altitude. Being unfamilliar with the mode C, he thought they meant to actually dial in his altitude into the transponer (he was at 7500 ft remember). ATC then asked him if everything wa alright. "Affirmative" he replied. "Is there a gun on board?" They asked. He was a cop remember, and happened to have a gun with him at the time. Without questioning why they cared, he simply replied "Afirmative." The National Guard was waiting for him when he landed. |

| Heard that story yesterday... GGE is where we do our maintenance... Laughed my butt off. They had the SWAT team called out and when he pulled up on the ramp he was surrounded at gunpoint... ![]()
