| had a Senior CPO come talk about his career in the Navy and he got to do some cool work. As a tech he got to taxi the airplane which I believe isnt allowed anymore due to the Navy's jet aircraft. Anyways, he mentioned that an engine can sall on reverse giving you no power at all. How does this work? |

| Umm, maybe the deflected airflow is somehow not deflected forward around the exhaust, but back into the exhaust, causing some sort of disruption in the turbine that causes the compressors to stall? Beats me. Reversers dont do anything to the operation of the turbines or compressors, they just redirect airflow coming out the back of the engine. Anyone? |

| Agent Smith | Turbojets or turboprops? Turboprops simply change the blade to a negative angle for reverse and turbojets either have 'sleeves' (MD-90) or 'clamshells' (MD-88) to deflect exhaust, but there's really no 'reverse' per se. |

| I would bet $5 he is talking about radial engines. When I was flying piston Convairs, the engines would frequently stall out(like old carburetor car engines would do) while going into reverse. You had to put alot of power into the engine while the prop was in transition to reverse pitch, or it would caugh and die! Not a good thing while your landing on slippery/icey runways. The engine made a really loud grown as the prop passed fine pitch, but to keep it running you had to. This exact thing happened to be while doing OE on a guy in the piston while landing on a snowy runway in CVG. Nothing like sliding down the runway sideways.... Those radial engines were a handfull sometimes! JT-3 engine DC-8's were very bad about compressor stalling at low power settings, but I don't remember about hearing them doing it while in reverse. |

[/ QUOTE ] Hey Shorts, don't forget the classic 'prop feathering out of reverse.' Nothing like exiting the runway and taxiing in with a feathered prop, making it look like you just did a single-engine landing. |

| I've seen a compressor stall on a DC-8 when it went into reverse... perhaps that could be it? |

Snowstorm.... no de-ice..... #2 engine stalled out IN reverse and we couldn't get it going foward to taxi.... and after all that blowing out the voltage regulator and spending the night in Evansville!! Oh how I don't miss those days. |

[/ QUOTE ] I don't miss them either, except for that one cold winter night when you and I were flying out of PIT and the #1 engine put on a 4th of July display for the rampers! I can still have a laugh about that one, but not much else from back then. |
