Default Lakefront Airport

Here's the last weather report from Lakefront:

http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/KNEW.html

Has anyone heard anything about this airport since the hurricane?

KNEW is very close to the 17th St Canal that has been getting so much press because of its breach.

The last pictures I saw showed it pretty badly flooded. This was a couple of days ago.

Kind of chilling panning around the map, and alternating between 'satellite' and 'Katrina.' Wow.

Yeah a lot of people around here won't be flying for a while, including myself!

Satellite images from a NOAA site.
These overlap and are zoomed in a tiny bit further than the Google map. Probably taken a day or so after the Google one because the taxiways and runways are a little bit drier.

I live in Covington. Lots of wind damage and powerline damage; same as Mandeville. Slidell is bady flooded. West of Covington such as Hammond are weren't affected as much. Hwy 190 has power, expect a 2hr wait in line for gas. Lots of power crews from as far as NY have come to assist.

The power company is doing a great job assessing the situation.

Lakefront ain't gonna be opening for a while, folks.

It's too bad, another airport to get supplies into, especially close to the hardest hit areas, would have been great.

From AOPA:

Preliminary reports show that New Orleans Lakefront was the hardest hit; there currently is no power, lighting, or fuel. It will be a considerable time before that airport is reopened. The Orleans Levee Commission, which runs Lakefront, has contacted the FAA about a federal grant to repair the airport.

At least they are planning to repair and reopen. It could of been used as an excuse to leave it closed..forever.

Yeah, that should definately be the last of our concerns...other than the fact maybe it would be useful in relief efforts.
