Summer Flight Delays Blamed on Demand, LCCs and RJs

"The increasing delays were blamed on soaring demand, along with the growth in low-cost carriers, flight reductions at airline hub airports and a tripling in the use of smaller regional jets, said the report by Inspector General Ken Mead. ... Low-cost carriers account for one quarter of all domestic seats sold in the United States. Regional jets make up 32 percent of all scheduled flights, versus 10 percent in 2000."

I'm not sure what's going on but PHL has been a wreck for months. I broke my record of being late by only two hours a couple of days ago getting out. A few week ago, we were only, say, #40 in line for takeoff.

The entire eastern seaboard has been a nightmare for months.

Let's see, boys and girls. When you have more people than you can handle smoothly, what does economics 101 teach you to do in order to bring things down to a more manageable level?

That's right, raise prices.

Sure, you'll lose some people, but right now, the system can't handle all of the people!

Seems like a good time to raise fares to a level that actually is profitable!

SW added services and increased it. USAir made PHL its primary hub and making PIT a focus city.

I was in PIT a couple of times last month...it's like a ghost town these days. I could swear I saw some tumbleweeds go blowing through! There was nothing going on.
