Default Bob Hoover...Glass of Water Video??

During my countless hours of scouring the internet for information on becoming a pilot, I ran across several references of an old famous pilot...Bob Hoover. (in redneck accent...no offense) "word is that Bob Hoover dun went and barrel rolled a 707 with a glass of water on the dashboard and didn't spill a drop".

At first reading of this, you would think WOW! But after reading more about it, the physics make sense....as long as you keep 1g, the glass won't fall.

Anyway, I am just curious if anyone knows if there is a link anywhere on the internet to actually watch a 707 do a barrel roll? Anybody? Anybody?

I remembered seeing the video once or twice on TV, but I've never seen it anywhere on the internet. I saw Bob Hoover's routine with his Shrike Comander a few years back at an airshow, it was insanely impressive. Also, when I was a little kid, there was a C-5 demonstration where the C-5 did some things that an aircraft like that probably shouldn't do (I don't recall if they got upside down or not, but if not they came very close, I believe they did a manuever similar to an immelman.) Good luck finding that video though! and if you do find it, make sure that you post the link here.

The barrel-roll was not done by Bob Hoover but by legendary Boeing test pilot AM "Tex" Johnson (I'm pretty sure that's his name).

I've got a 5.5 MB of the Dash 80 barrel roll on my computer from a site called www.dash80.com, but it seems to be down at the moment. After a quick search on Yahoo!, I was able to find a slightly different video, although the actual footage is the same: Boeing 707 (Dash 80) barrel roll during early test flight. Never saw the one with the glass of water, and couldn't find one.

I found that refernce searching for the video. But I also saw Hoover referenced doing it in the 707 with the glass of water also.

I found this video of Hoover doing his Shrike routine. A couple of amazing things in the video:

He does a flyby above the runway with both engines feathered. He then pulls up vertical like he is going to do a loop. When he gets to the top he lets the plane nose down forward and restarts the engines on the way down.

He does a flyby over the runway and literally brings it down to a foot above the runway with the gear up, He then pulls up and lowers the gear as he is climbing.

It is a quicktime video. The first minute or so is a commercial.

Man, B-1s are almost like fighters IMO. They would be my first choice in the USAF. Awesome aircraft. Large, fast, and agile.

I think Bob Hoover flew an airshow routine with a Rockwell Commander. He did all sorts of single engine stuff including rolls (on a single engine!) with his coffee cup sitting on the glareshield not spilling a drop. I saw a video of one of his airshow routines, incredible stuff!

Did you see the video of his routine I posted a couple of posts above? It is in a Commander Shrike.

Speaking of Bob Hoover, his autobiography "Forever Flying" is an excellent book.

I remember seeing him at an air show in the mid 1970's. He did an amazing routine in his Shrike Commander. He also had a yellow P-51 Mustang, but he didn't fly it that day.

I believe he use to do a routine in a Rockwell Sabre corporate jet as well.
