To go off topic...

What I've never looked into, is why has the U-2 outlived the SR-71? Hasn't the SR-71 been retired, yet it was younger than the U-2?

I watched a show about the SR-71 once - their flight suits looked like space suits! Imagine ejecting from the altitudes they fly at...

Less wear & tear on the U2 than the SR71, plus, I think the SR71 had much more cycles than did the U2...

Plus, SR-71 cost to operate was way up there. U-2 pilots wear the same gear as the SR-71 guys did.

Now there's an informative news article if I've ever red one ;-)

Sucks about the crash though, hope the pilot, and all on the ground were ok.

That's pretty bad! I hope the pilot is okay, I met a lady who flies the U2; hope it wasn't her.

"....went down during a flight in support of Operation Enduring Freedom...."

Interesting.......that sort of narrows down the area of interest to a few notable "finalists".

Hostile action? Maybe. You've gotta wonder why the pilot didn't get out.

At least he didn't have to take the NaCN pills.

I still can't believe the military was able to develop this aircraft over 50 years ago.
Makes you wonder what they are capable of doing nowadays.

Where do you think all the UFO sightings come from...

If I were the government, I'd let people think they are UFOs to cover up my secret aircraft

NaCN = poison tablets to prevent spilling the beans about the mission and plane!

also, my condolences to the pilot and family...

The gov't just wants you to believe they parked all the 71's. But I remember reading that 2 of the airframes can't be accounted for. Not counting the planes NASA flies...

Al Dhafra Air Base, about an hour outside the capital city of Abu Dhabi. The base is used by U.S. forces.

I've landed there to refuel before going up to Afghanistan, We parked on the U2 Ramp.

You never know, afterall, they were able to keep the B2 & the F117 secret for a while, there could be a new type of airplane flying right now that we do not know about....

Chalk that up to Kelly Johnson and a smarter government back then. They just told Kelly what they needed, handed him a blank check (which he never abused) and then walked away, no meddling. Kelly always over-delivered and gave them more for their money.

If we had turned the space program over to him instead of the Germans we'd be flying into space today. D'oh!

As to what they are capable of today? Pretty much anything as long as it's late and massively over budget!

Rules of the Skunkworks

And RIP to our valiant spy.
