Private Pilot Licence

Hello there everyone. My name is Hunter Smith and i'm currently 16 with 35+ hours logged. I will be 17 December 11. I am wondering what the easiest way to study for my PPL is. I herd that there are websites out there that spit out the whole PPL question bank at you and you just need to memorize it all. If you know of any helpful websites or study ideas, please let me know. Thanks a whole lot!

For studying for the written I used a combination of three books: Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook, FAA's Airplane Flying Handbook, and the Gleim book specifically for the written. I don't see a problem, IMO, using the Gleim to see the questions and answers, but please learn the material instead of memorizing the questions. All the best!

For most of my writtens I've used the ASA Test Prep books and they've worked well. Just make sure to read the explanations for each topic at the start of the section and you should do fine. Don't use wrote memory for the test...it might work, but you need to learn the material before your checkride anyway, so you might as well start now.

Also, for studying ground school in general, not just to pass the written exams, but for good, useful flying knowledge, I'd recommend a video or DVD course from any of the major producers. I've used King Schools videos for my Private and Flight Instructor certificates, Sporty's DVDs for my instrument rating, and Jeppesen videos for my Commercial certificate. All of them worked well. You'll pay a couple hundred bucks for them, but I think the knowledge you gain will shorten your training by 2 or 3 flight hours, so they practically pay for themselves.

Of course, find what works for you. Personally, I learn better by watching TV rather than reading a book or listening to a lecture presented by a live teacher (depending on the teacher, of course). But if you like reading or prefer the personal interaction of traditional ground school, that's fine. Go for it.

ASA prepware is also great for finding out how much you have learned and will make you more confident going into the test.

It is a little pricey about $50 but I bought all mine and sold them to people behind me in training.

I have had great luck with the ASA test preps on all my tests. As mentioned, please try to learn the material as oppose to using rote memorization. Good luck.

Back to the subject....I got The Student Pilot Flight Manual, and I've only looked at it a little but it looks pretty good so far.

It's all about the Gleim for the Writtens.
Never got lower than a 99.

I used the Jeppesen Private Pilot Knowledge Test Study Guide and took the practice test at Sportys.com until I was consistently scoring in the 90's; I ended up getting a 95 on the real thing.

And also I'd highly recommend you get their computer software which had the EXACT questions that are in the PPL Written Exam administered by the FAA. Basically, all the other testing prep software out there will do just as good...

I was in the same spot as you last year. I turned 17 on Jan 5th, and got my Private two weeks later. I did the same thing as Joe more or less. I had the Jepp text book, and written prep. I outlined every chapter of the text book then took practice tests on sporty's until I was scoring high. It worked out well as I scored a 90 on the first try.

The Gleim is a good tool to use when studying for the Private Pilot written. Try to study from another source prior to hitting the Gleim though, something that really goes through all the information in depth. I would suggest studying from the Jeppesen Private Pilot text book, get through that with all the practive questions etc then try to get through the Gleim.

Memorizing the Gleim is pretty easy and in the long run won't help you much for the oral portion of your PPL exam. By studying another source in depth you'll give yourself a better foundation for the oral and future ratings.

I disagree. When studying for the oral exam, you can use the Gleim by covering over ALL the possible answers and trying to answer the question with a detailed description.
