Well, lets look at this...

The only rating anyone is set into, is by how many posts they have. This is great in some stiuations, but is very contriversial in others. I personally have lurked for about two years, since one of my students let me know about the site, till about 3-4 months ago, when I figured my opinion might, just maybe, be listened to. Then I had to remember that true knowledge is knowing that you know nothing. I have taken my fair share of that. Just because I have less then 150 posts here on this site leaves the subject very obscure. At the same time if the rating system was changed, ie, giving a subject such as Time, Types of ac flown, current job, etc it would be very simple to create a false hierarchy. Perfect example is myself. There are many out there who have their heart set on flying for a regional, and progressing as quickly as possible to a major and working up the ladder. The problem is that I don't see myself taking the less then minium pay to fly a jet, I instead would like to progress more logically, from CFI to 135 piston twin, to what ever is next. Some people see that as a step sideways, because I am not reaching my potential with the times that I have. But I disagree. I think instead of flying for an airline (regional) with little better then CFI pay is a SLAP IN THE MOTHER F(#)%(#NG FACE, I would rather work for a company who has respect for their employees and is willing to pay them for their time and experience. This is the problem. Some may take my word for a little less then from a member who posts from their GIA graduate, Pinnacle FO position. Of which I cannot say anything bad about personally, but it is not the road for me. My point being, that in any situation, the only way to create a hierarchy of posters is to have personal opinions from the Admin. He (Doug) gets the final word on all of those types of decisions, and has made moderators out of a few. Those decisions should be made from Doug, and Out of Doug's opinion. I haven't always agreed with Doug or the moderators, but if I were to agree all the time, there would be no conversation.

IMO.... LET YOUR OPINION BE KNOWN AND POST IT... IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION AND SOMEONE GIVES YOU A HARD TIME, LET THEM KNOW THAT THEIR UN-SUPPORTIVE SPIRIT KILLS THE BASIC PREMIS OF THIS FOURM. IMO

Also, Sarcasm is great in the Lav, but in General topics, we should all respect the posters questions, and give in our best professional opinion, an answer that will help the poster through the point in the career that they are at.

There's a built-in rating system in the software, but the first 'wah, I'm a three, who rated me low Doug? Make the pain stop!' and I'm deactivating it again!

The least you could do is reset everyone back to zero. I'm at two only due to the smear campaign Eagle instigated way back when, yet he and I ended up getting along famously. (Though I'll probably get the same treatment from DE727UPS.)

Probably just a simple SQL update command against the database.

For example, if i wanted to search a topic about short field landings, a ton of threads will pop up just because the word landings. Then I would have to go from page to page to see if theres a specific thread that answers what im looking for.

[/ QUOTE ]You could just search like this : +"short field landings"

That'll reaaallllyyyyy make it easier!!

Don't they teach this in college??

[/ QUOTE ] really? even I didn't know that and I've found searching to be a pain as well....

I'm thinking we need to put that in the FAQ section of JC....

[/ QUOTE ]The "quotation marks" trick can be used in pretty much all search engines. It really helps filter out the irrelevant hits when you are stalk...er, I mean "Googling" someone.

Actually I agree with you, but it does get tiresome when 3 people in the same week create posts asking the same question.

I personally will answer the question, because I figure why not. It's much more helpful to give the answer than just say, "Already covered".

It's not what you do, but how you do it. In that sense, here's the deal: If someone new posts a question that's already been answered ad-nauseum, a reply could have a link to where that thread, with a simple "it's over here", or "you might find what you need here". There's nothing wrong with that. There's no need to slam dunk someone for simply asking a question, but pointing them in the right direction is fine.

I've said in a post to 'use the search function'. It's been because I know the subject was discussed, and I point them to other threads if they want some info right away, and they can read those other threads and maybe get some info they're looking for without having to wait for others to respond. Also maybe someone responded in the other post, who may not be around anymore or may not see this new thread to offer their insight.

I've never meant it in a way that was meant to belittle a person's question, just that the other threads may have something to offer.

Another trend is to nicely say " I point them in the right direction" since this issue has been called out, but many of ya'll are trying to brush off what you may consider a stupid, elementary, or etc. type of question. I am not directing this at anyone in particular, but ya'll know who ya'll be
