Default Microwave Landing Systems

Anybody heard of em or used them in approaches? I hear there supposed to replace the ILS also that it is being tested at some airports.

heard of them before, i think they are the same as the ILS only that they can also provide a curved path instead of a straight line like current ILS. Didn't the military use this exclusively? check in the AIM, i remember MLS being in there. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I knew there was arcs to the ILS, but never full on arc approaches. Looks sweet.

I believe the new "ILS" that utilize GPS signals have made Mircrowave Landing systems an Idea of the past.

Not so fast, just yet there........

It's actually going strong in some places, albeit not in the numbers projected when it first came out to make the ILS obsolete. MLS and MMLS still exist at places like Andrews AFB and Dyess AFB, as well as overseas locations where, in mountainous terrain, there is a need for precision approach capability, but no room to put a "straight" Localizer installation due to the terrain. An MLS allows you to "curve around" the terrain and maintain TERPS clearance, while retaining onboard precision approach capability (as opposed to PAR).
