| Old Skool | AUS...hell all of Texas and the south in fact have lower cost of living. You can get alot more house with less money. Something to consider since you were looking to move out of the parents house and start being more independent! -Matthew |

| I love Austin. I've been here 24 years. Lots of people keep moving here, so rush hour traffic gets a little worse each day. Still I'm sure it's nothing compared to Chicago traffic. You as a pilot probably wouldn't have to deal with rush hour traffic much anyway. We're getting toll roads shortly, but I still think it's a great town with lots to do and good (but often hot) weather. |

| Old Skool | Yeah, I can't see any reason to move away from Austin for the time being. It's a 2 hr 45 min drive to IAH from my apartment, and I can usually get to the IAH crew room in 2 hours doorstep-to-doorstep if I fly it on CAL (about 16-18 fts/day AUS-IAH, mostly 737). All of my friends live here, my family is in the area, I can't get enough of the lakes, hills, concerts, sixth street, NCAA sports, etc. etc. etc. Still trying to save up for a boat so I can start wakeboarding out on lake travis again...maybe in 2 or 3 years I can afford something with enough HP to pull my fat ass out of the water. In any event, I've thought about moving back to Houston for the pure convenience of it, but I don't think I'll be doing that until some of my reasons to stay in Austin dry up... Plus the lakes in houston have gators in them. |

| [ QUOTE ] Bottom Line Folks...EWR rocks. [/ QUOTE ] Amen to that! I came to EWR with the idea of base transferring to IAH. After a few months I discovered that I LOVE flying in the northeast. You could not pay me to be CLE based and the summers are too hot for me in Houston...I'm a 4 seasons kind of guy. Although I'm obviously biased, EWR crews seem to be a lot more laid back...not to mention we smile and wave to our fellow pilots in the terminal. I make a point to say hello or give the head nod to every crew I pass in IAH for the sole reason that they NEVER respond. Head down, walk staight I think is their motto! Perhaps I intimidate them with my good looks...or not. |

| Old Skool | [ QUOTE ] I make a point to say hello or give the head nod to every crew I pass in IAH for the sole reason that they NEVER respond. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, we're cold hearted like that. But seriously I feel a little weird saying hi to somebody I don't know just because I pass them in the hallway, but then again I'm a total introvert and like to keep things low key if possible, especially in public. On top of that we'd have to say hi or nod about 500 times going from the crew room to our gate if we achknowledged every fellow employee we see; no point in it really. I do nod or say hi if I see a captain or FA I've flown with or another FO I know, but that's it. Now what happens when we pass a colgan crew in Terminal B? Good question. hehehe. Maybe Texas ain't so friendly after all, at least in the world of coex. |

| Agent Smith | I'll give the nod if I make eye contact with someone, but beyond that, you'll feel like Miss America at the Macy's day Xmas parade if you're going to wave at crews in some cities. Plus it saves this embarassing exchange which happens very often in the pilot lounge: "Hey Doug, how ya been?" "Good!" "How's the commute?" "Good!" "Gotta run, see ya!" "Goo...umm, see ya!" (who the HECK was that?!) |

| I'm with Doug on the nod. I don't actually say hello to everyone. However I've noticed that IAH is the only hub where a simple smile or nod is rudely ignored. You'd think EWR would be the cold hearted base but I guess not. |

| Old Skool | Well, can't speak for everybody but I do try to reciprocate if I see somebody nod or wave at me, but half the time it's intended the other person that I didn't know was behind me so I end up looking like a total tool haha. |

[/ QUOTE ] Maybe their thought process is like this: "Who is that guy? Is he based here? I bet he has more seniority than me and is thinking of transferring. Great, six more months on reserve because this EWR schmuck wants a cheaper house. Maybe if I ignore him he'll think we're all mean and go away." |

I had not thought of it that way. Me base transferring should be the least of his concerns! |

| Agent Smith | When I was based in MCO, I got sick of pilots looking at my date of hire, so I took a piece of black tape and taped over it. It was on for about six hours before the chief pilot (a swell guy) said, "Doug, umm..." -- before he even finished the sentence, I removed it and smiled. |

| I would have done that, too. It's a shame that's how things are. |

| Old Skool | Dude, it doesn't change even if you're a ramper. We'd have temp guys come to MCO to help us out at SWA. First thing they did was look at the seniority list to see where they would be if they transferred. Hell, even I knew that I'd be in the top 40% if I went to BWI, but if I went anywhere else, I'd actually be lower than I was at MCO. BWI has a really crappy turnover rate, so most rampers transfer out when they hit 6 months or a year. |
