Default Rabbit....

An I'm not talking bout the mammalian kind!
Why do some airports have Rabbits at the end of the runway but others don't?
Example PHX,TUS don't have them in fact I believe the only airport that I have been at that may have them is LAX.
But I know for a fact that both JFK and DCA have them.
Anyone know any other airports that have White Rabbit lights?

There are a lot of airports that have sequenced flashing lights, aka "the rabbit". It just depends on what type of approach lighting the airport has. Each is different. It is listed on the approach charts for each runway which type of approach lighting is in place for that runway. Hope this helps!

Also, they dont always have the rabbits turned up if the wx is good, so you just because you dont see them doesnt mean they arent there.

Here's a link to the ILS approach chart for runway 11L at Tucson:

TUS ILS 11L

In the second row, in the center, you will see a diagram showing the approach light system, and the letters "MALSR". MALSR is the type of light system, and you can see further details on it in the AIM here:

AIM Chapter 2; Section 1. Airport Lighting Aids

You'll see that there are some flashing, sequenced lights on the MALSR. Not nearly as many lights or as complex as the ALSF-2 or ALSF-1 light systems, but still a version of the "rabbit".

Since you guys have to suffer with your version of "weather", there is probably seldom any reason to turn on the approach lights.

(PHX has MALSR on a couple of the runways also.)

(Looks like TUS runways 11/29 should be renamed 12/30. Both runways 11 are 123 degrees magnetic.)

It's because DMA (Davis Monthan AFB) single rwy. is 12/30. So they didn't want the two airports only maybe 3-5 miles apart (if that) to have similar rwy. numbers since they are the same magnetic heading.
Also on approach to 11L from the north you can only see DMA, TUS isn't at all visible.
In fact some pilots actually land at DMA think it is TUS.....(slaps head...doh!)
